Another cold snap is anticipated, as forecasts indicate a potential Arctic blast could impact the UK this month. With temperatures expected to plummet to -7C in certain areas, the situation resembles a previous severe winter event known as the ‚Beast from the East‘ in 2018.
The inclement weather may persist for 10 days, bringing both snow and frigid temperatures to various regions. According to WX Charts, which utilizes data from the Met Office, widespread snowfall could occur throughout the country by the end of the month.
Potential Impacts of the Forecast
Forecasts suggest that Scotland might experience up to 60cm of snowfall and temperatures hovering around -7C on January 26. Snow is also expected in major urban areas such as London, Birmingham, and Manchester.
Senior meteorologist Jim Dale of British Weather Services explained, „The last few simulations have indicated that high pressure develops over Norway and Sweden, leading to easterly winds beginning around January 21. At the moment, however, conditions remain dry, and we need to see more sustained weather patterns that can bring significant snowfall, not just cold winds.“
Forecast Uncertainty
Dale outlined three potential scenarios: no snowfall but persistent cold easterly winds, brief snow flurries followed by a shift to milder conditions, or a fully developed ‘Beast’ that brings substantial snowfall for an extended period. „If such a weather pattern develops, it could possibly extend into early February,“ he noted.
The Met Office’s long-range forecast indicates a competition between Atlantic weather systems and high pressure from the east, suggesting the likelihood of colder conditions increasing as January 20 to January 29 progresses. The agency stated that the shift towards colder weather may enhance the risk of snowfall across parts of the UK.
As additional context, the Met Office has also issued warnings regarding potential flooding in some areas of London today, attributed to heavy rainfall.
