98 Years: Legacy of World War Two Codebreaker Ruth Bourne

„Ruth Bourne’s contribution to the monumental task of breaking the Enigma cipher was truly historic,“ stated the Taxi Charity for Military Veterans.

A World War Two codebreaker renowned for her work at Bletchley Park has passed away at the age of 98.

Ruth Bourne, a Jewish veteran from High Barnet in north London, enlisted in the Women's Royal Naval Service at 18 years old. She was later selected to serve at the classified facility in Buckinghamshire, where she decoded intercepted messages.

Bombe Machine and Key Contributions

At Bletchley Park, Bourne operated and verified the Bombe machine, an electromechanical device developed by Alan Turing to decipher Germany's Enigma code. This innovation accelerated the identification of daily settings required for decoding enemy communications, significantly impacting the war and saving millions of lives.

In 2018, Bourne received the Légion d'honneur, France's highest military honor, acknowledging her vital service.

Bourne expressed a sense of „personal satisfaction“ from her participation in anti-Nazi efforts, although she was largely unaware of the broader objectives at Bletchley Park, recalling, „I only knew my bit,“ having been sworn to secrecy.

A Lasting Impact

The legacy of Bletchley Park’s codebreakers allowed British intelligence to swiftly respond to decrypted information, contributing to crucial military victories. Their groundbreaking work also facilitated the advancement of codebreaking techniques and the emergence of early computers.

Ruth Bourne’s remarkable life and contributions have left an indelible mark, and she will be deeply missed by those who had the honor of knowing her.
