A 13-year-old boy has been taken into custody for allegedly inciting other youths to engage in fights involving weapons during a phenomenon known as „school wars,“ which has proliferated from London to various regions across the UK via social media platforms.
The young suspect, hailing from Sheffield, faces charges related to malicious communications and a public order offense. He is currently being held by South Yorkshire Police.
Earlier this month, authorities in east London apprehended a 15-year-old boy and a man in his twenties on suspicion of encouraging or facilitating criminal activity.
Reports indicate that children as young as 11 have been urged to confront rival students through posts circulating on platforms such as TikTok, Snapchat, and Instagram.
These messages instruct pupils to equip themselves with various items, including compasses, scissors, metal combs, rulers, and even kitchen knives and fireworks.
Visuals reminiscent of notorious Los Angeles street gangs, such as the Bloods and Crips, have emerged, depicting individuals in balaclavas and promoting „Red vs Blue“ confrontations among students.
Each educational institution is categorized under opposing „sides“ for organized brawl „rounds“ in boroughs like Hackney, Islington, Camden, Newham, Croydon, Greenwich, Havering, and Rainham.
In response to the escalating situation, the Metropolitan Police have deployed officers at school entrances and have even canceled detentions at several institutions across the capital.
Authorities have been granted additional powers in light of the potential for „school wars“ in a London borough, with a police dispersal order currently active in Greenwich until 10 PM on Friday.
Last month, a 13-year-old boy was accused of stabbing two other boys, aged 12 and 13, in the neck and spraying another with insect repellent at Kingsbury High School in Brent.
Inspector Katie Hammond from Sheffield stated, „We recognize the concerns that parents, families, staff, and students have experienced since these social media posts began to surface in South Yorkshire. We are committed to providing support and reassurance to our local schools and communities through a visible police presence and increased patrols.“
She continued, „Behind the scenes, we are actively monitoring social media, conducting intelligence checks, and working diligently to identify and shut down the accounts responsible for these posts. We are treating this issue with utmost seriousness and are taking all necessary measures to address it promptly and effectively.“
Hammond expressed confidence in the majority of children in South Yorkshire, stating, „I believe that most young people here recognize that this trend is reckless and irresponsible, and does not reflect the positive relationships that exist among our educational institutions, youth, and communities.“
