The cancellation of the Wireless Festival in north London this summer is projected to inflict a £30 million loss on the local economy. The festival, which was scheduled to take place in Finsbury Park, was abruptly called off on Tuesday after the Home Office confirmed that headliner Kanye West would be barred from entering the UK.
Kanye West, who is also known as Ye, was set to headline the event from July 10 to 12, with ticket prices ranging from £140 to £360. The urban music festival typically attracts crowds of up to 50,000 attendees each day. However, the Government revoked West’s visa due to his past behavior, which includes releasing a song titled „Heil Hitler“ and promoting merchandise featuring a swastika on his website.
Earlier this year, West issued an apology for his antisemitic comments, attributing them to manic episodes linked to his bipolar disorder.
A spokesperson for Wireless promoter, Festival Republic, stated: „As a result of the Home Office denying YE entry into the United Kingdom, Wireless Festival is cancelled. All ticket holders will receive an automatic full refund.“
An Economic Impact Assessment commissioned by Festival Republic following the Wireless Festival held in Crystal Palace Park in 2022 revealed that the event generated £37 million in economic activity, with £28 million benefiting the UK economy. This included nearly £5 million in additional income for local businesses, much of which was spent on accommodations in the area.

Controversy Surrounding Kanye West
Prior to the cancellation of Wireless, West had attempted to justify his headlining role at the festival, expressing a desire to promote „unity, peace, and love“ in London. However, he has faced extensive backlash for his previous comments, including expressions of admiration for Adolf Hitler and a series of antisemitic statements, for which he issued an apology in January.

Benn emphasized, „We are not giving him a platform to extol opinion of whatever nature, only to perform the songs that are currently played on the radio stations in our country and the streaming platforms in our country and listened to and enjoyed by millions.“ However, the Campaign Against Antisemitism argued that there was a „clear case“ for banning West from entering the UK.
