Voices of tradition resonate as the annual Trooping the Colour ceremony approaches, a cherished event that marks the official birthday of the monarch. This year, the celebration is scheduled for Saturday, June 13, 2026, drawing thousands of spectators eager to witness the spectacle.

Event Details

The Trooping the Colour ceremony, also known as the King’s Birthday Parade, will commence at 10:30 AM at Horse Guards Parade in Whitehall. The King’s Company, part of the 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards, will lead the parade, showcasing their colors in front of His Majesty. The event will feature over 1,350 soldiers from the Household Division and the King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery, accompanied by 300 musicians from the Massed Bands and an additional 250 service personnel lining the procession route.

Following the ceremony, senior members of the Royal Family will gather on the balcony of Buckingham Palace, where they will greet the public as thousands wave Union Jack flags along The Mall, eagerly anticipating the Royal Air Force flypast.

Historical Context

The origins of Trooping the Colour can be traced back to battlefield drills conducted by monarchs during times of war. The first ceremonial event occurred in the 1680s under King Charles II, who inspected the uniforms of his grenadiers. The tradition became linked to the sovereign’s official birthday in 1748 during the reign of George II, and it was George III who established it as an annual event in 1760. The current format of the ceremony has remained largely unchanged since 1889.

Queen Victoria, who largely withdrew from public duties after her husband’s death, attended the Trooping the Colour only once in 1895. In contrast, Queen Elizabeth II participated in the ceremony every year of her reign except in 1955 due to a national rail strike. From 1969 to 1986, she rode on horseback during the event but transitioned to a carriage in 1987. King Charles III briefly returned to horseback in 2023 before reverting to carriage use in 2025.

Timings and Flypast Details

The parade is expected to conclude around 12:25 PM, with the Royal Air Force flypast scheduled for approximately 1:00 PM. Iconic aircraft will soar over significant landmarks, including Buckingham Palace, The Mall, and St. James’s Park. While the specific aircraft involved in the flypast have yet to be officially confirmed, a rehearsal on June 2 showcased a variety of planes, including a Chinook, Phenom, A400M Atlas, C-17 Globemaster, Voyager, Typhoon, Poseidon, and F-35B Lightnings.

The aircraft will depart from East Anglia at 11:00 AM, flying over the North Sea before heading towards Lowestoft, Great Yarmouth, and Southwold, then continuing over Ipswich, Colchester, Chelmsford, and London, before moving westward over Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, and Oxfordshire.

Viewing Recommendations

For those wishing to experience the parade in person, prime viewing locations include The Mall and the edges of St. James’s Park, where spectators are advised to arrive by 9:00 AM. However, it is important to note that views may be partially obstructed by the troops participating in the ceremony. For those unable to attend, the Trooping the Colour will be broadcast live on the BBC, allowing audiences to partake in this grand celebration from the comfort of their homes.

As the date approaches, anticipation builds for this time-honored event, which not only celebrates the monarch’s birthday but also showcases the rich history and pageantry of the British Armed Forces.
