Chris Brown appears in London court over alleged ‚bottle attack‘

Chris Brown appears in London court over alleged ‚bottle attack‘

Chris Brown appeared at Southwark Crown Court on Wednesday regarding allegations stemming from an incident in February 2023. The R&B artist has pleaded not guilty to a charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, which prosecutors describe as an „unprovoked attack“ on his former friend, Abraham Diaw, at the Tape private members‘ club in Mayfair.

In addition to the assault charge, Brown has denied possessing an offensive weapon—a bottle—in a public setting, as well as a charge of attempting to inflict grievous bodily harm during the Dirty Martini club night at the same venue.

Details of the Court Appearance

During the court proceedings, Brown was seen wearing a white jacket over a black shirt paired with smart grey trousers. He was accompanied by security personnel as he entered the courthouse.

In the dock, he exchanged greetings with his co-defendant, vocal coach Omololu Akinlolu, 39, who has also denied a charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

  • The hearing lasted eight minutes, during which lawyers provided updates to the judge regarding trial preparations.
  • Bail conditions were reaffirmed during this session.

Background and Next Steps

Brown, a two-time Grammy winner recognized for hits like „Run It“ and „With You,“ was granted bail last year after posting a £5 million security fee. This arrangement allowed him to continue his scheduled tour while surrendering his passport upon entering each country.

Approximately a dozen supporters were present in the public gallery during the hearing, and Brown acknowledged them with a wave as he exited the courtroom.

The singer was arrested at Manchester’s Lowry Hotel in the early hours of May 15 last year by detectives from the Metropolitan Police. Both Brown and Akinlolu are set to return to court for another pre-trial hearing in April, with a trial scheduled for October.
