The former prince, who lost his title as the Duke of York last year, is facing renewed scrutiny.
Elected officials from the City of London Corporation have decided to reach out to Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, inviting him to give up his freedom of the city.
Mountbatten-Windsor, the brother of King Charles, was granted this honor 14 years ago.
In February, he was arrested on allegations of misconduct in public office, intensifying the pressure surrounding his associations with the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
A spokesperson for the local authority stated:
„Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor received the freedom of the City of London in 2012 by virtue of patrimony, which is inherited as the child of a freeman and constitutes a legal right.“
They further explained,
„Applications via patrimony are not considered or endorsed by our elected members, and there is no effective legal mechanism to remove this type of freedom.“
The elected members have agreed to send a formal invitation to Mountbatten-Windsor, asking him to relinquish this honor. They will review any response he provides at a future meeting to determine potential actions.
