A newly minted £2 coin featuring a tiger, a snail, and a dove has been issued to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Zoological Society of London (ZSL).
The coin, which includes the inscription „restoring wildlife together“ along its edge, was produced by the Royal Mint in partnership with ZSL.
The official launch took place at ZSL’s London Zoo in Regent’s Park, where a large wooden replica of the coin, measuring 2 meters (6 feet 6 inches) in diameter, was presented to the zoo’s Sumatran tigers, who were invited to give their „roar“ of approval.
Design and Symbolism
This replica was part of activities designed to engage the animals‘ natural instincts, such as stalking and hunting.
The reverse side of the coin, often referred to as the „tails“ design, features three animals that the Mint describes as embodying a significant narrative regarding ZSL’s conservation efforts: the Sumatran tiger, the Socorro dove, and the Partula snail.
Each animal is intricately illustrated, showcasing the texture of the tiger’s fur, the delicate feathers of the dove, and the ribbed surface of the snail’s shell. Bamboo grasses intertwine among the creatures, symbolizing the natural habitats that ZSL strives to protect and restore.
Statements from Officials
Lucy Mackenzie, director of digital and product concept at the Royal Mint, stated, „This coin is so much more than a commemorative piece; it’s a tribute to two centuries of dedication to wildlife and our planet. We’re proud to support ZSL, and every purchase contributes directly to its vital environmental work.“
Established in 1826 by Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles with the aim of advancing zoological science, ZSL operates in over 70 countries, focusing on restoring natural habitats, protecting endangered species, and educating future conservationists.
The coin became available for purchase from the Royal Mint starting Tuesday, with prices beginning at £17.50.
Additionally, gold and silver versions of the coin are offered, with the gold variant priced at £2,505 and silver coins available at £107.50 and £190, depending on weight.
