Community Impact as Four Cafes Transition to Daisy Green Chain

A recent decision to transfer the management of four independently operated cafes to a coffee chain based in London has sparked significant discontent among local residents and stakeholders, according to community advocates.

The City of London Corporation (CLC) has selected Daisy Green to oversee cafes located at Queen’s Park, Golders Hill Park, Parliament Hill Lido, and Parliament Hill Fields, with the transition set to take effect in spring 2026. This decision followed a competitive tendering process.

Community Response to the Change

Emma Fernandez, who co-manages three of these cafes, expressed her concern, stating that the CLC is „destroying this fabric which is holding together the community.“ She emphasized the deep connections the cafes have fostered within the neighborhoods they serve.

In response, the CLC asserted that the selection of Daisy Green would introduce new investment into the establishments. They emphasized that the tendering process was conducted in a manner that was „open, inclusive, and widely publicized.“ As of January 31, existing operators have been informed they must vacate the premises.

Concerns Over Job Security

The CLC noted that current operators had been working under short-term arrangements deemed „unsustainable.“ Patrick Matthews and Emma Fernandez, who operate the cafes at Parliament Hill Lido, Queen’s Park, and Highgate Wood, worry that the impending takeover could jeopardize employment for approximately 50 staff members during peak seasons and about 30 during the off-season.

Local patrons, including regulars like Kate Orr and Imogen West, have voiced their concerns about the loss of community-centric services. Orr remarked, „This cafe was part of the community,“ highlighting its significance in fostering connections among diverse residents.

Historic Community Resistance

Historically, attempts to re-tender café operations have faced opposition, as evidenced by a previous failed takeover by coffee chain Benugo in 2016, which ended after significant protests. The efforts to save the cafes have garnered substantial support, including a petition that gathered over 20,000 signatures.

Daisy Green currently operates more than 20 venues in London and is inspired by Australian coffee culture. Co-founder Prue Freeman expressed enthusiasm about the opportunity, stating that the company prides itself on supporting local suppliers and charities, as well as fostering family-friendly environments.

Official Endorsements

Alderman Gregory Jones KC, chair of the CLC’s Hampstead Heath, Highgate Wood, and Queen’s Park Committee, articulated confidence in Daisy Green, stating that the operator would inject „energy, creativity, and investment“ into each café. He noted that Daisy Green presented the most compelling proposal regarding quality, sustainability, affordability, and community value, all critical to the stewardship of these public spaces.

As the transition approaches, the community remains engaged in discussions regarding the future of its beloved local cafes.
