Labour has relinquished its control over Wandsworth Council after a single term, following a closely contested election night that remained uncertain until the final results were announced. The South London borough has transitioned to a state of no overall control, with the Conservatives emerging as the party with the most seats, falling just short of achieving a two-seat majority.
Election Results Overview
The Conservative Party now holds 29 seats on Wandsworth Council, an increase of seven from the 22 seats it secured in 2022. This leaves them one seat shy of the 30 needed for a majority. In contrast, Labour has seen a decline to 28 seats, down seven from the 35 it won in the previous election. Independent councillor Malcolm Grimston retained his position as the most popular candidate, receiving 4,081 votes.
According to sources, the Conservatives are considering forming an alliance with Councillor Grimston, which would allow him to support the party on key votes, including budget decisions, while maintaining his status as an Independent. Conservative leader Aled Richards-Jones expressed his satisfaction with the election outcome, stating that it would enable the Tories to „take back control“ of the council.
“It’s a great result for us. It’s a great result for the borough. We can now get the borough’s finances back in order, we can improve services, we can protect weekly bin collections—those things that residents rely on—and we can also put more police officers on our streets and get young people a fairer deal on housing,” Richards-Jones remarked.

Richards-Jones further noted that this election served as a local referendum on the past four years of Labour governance in Wandsworth, which he characterized as a failure. He also suggested that voters expressed their dissatisfaction with the Labour Government at the national level. “I think both of those factors play their part,” he added. “But, fundamentally, I think we had a real offer for voters that resonated with them and their everyday concerns, and we’re really, really grateful they placed their trust in us and we’ll deliver on our manifesto for the next four years.”
The results mark a significant setback for Labour, contrasting sharply with the party’s success in 2022 when it took control of the historically Conservative stronghold for the first time since 1978, ending a 44-year period of Conservative dominance. Despite this shift, the Conservatives did not achieve a majority in what was once regarded as Margaret Thatcher’s favored council, known for its role in the Right to Buy scheme and the privatization of local services.
Predictions and Outcomes
Prior to the election held on May 7, analysts had forecasted a competitive race between Labour and the Conservatives, with both parties committing to maintaining the borough’s notably low council tax. PollCheck had predicted a Conservative minority government as the most likely scenario, estimating that the Tories would secure 29 seats while Labour would end up with 24. It also anticipated that Independent councillor Grimston would retain his seat, while the Greens, Liberal Democrats, and Reform UK would each gain one seat.
Labour entered the election holding 34 of the council’s 58 seats, having lost one to the Conservatives in a by-election in 2024. The Conservatives had 21 seats after Councillor Mark Justin’s defection to Reform. Justin subsequently lost his seat to the Conservatives in Nine Elms, which was the first ward to report results in this election.
Labour leader Simon Hogg successfully maintained his seat with 1,257 votes in Falconbrook, where fellow Labour councillor Kate Stock also secured her position with 1,133 votes. Conservative leader Aled Richards-Jones held onto his seat in Northcote with 2,583 votes, while new councillor James Kenton Craig was elected in the same ward with 2,551 votes.
Seat Changes and Party Strategies
The Conservatives gained two seats from Labour in St Mary’s and West Putney, as well as one seat each in Trinity, Wandle, and Battersea Park. Although the Green Party did not win any seats, it managed to attract votes from the main parties, particularly in Tooting Bec and Tooting Broadway, where Green candidates followed the three Labour winners in terms of vote count.
The Conservative manifesto focused on curbing Labour’s borrowing and spending initiatives, safeguarding essential services, and increasing police funding. They also pledged to enhance opportunities for renters to become homeowners. Meanwhile, Labour promised to maintain the borough’s low council tax and to construct an additional 1,000 council homes, building on the 1,000 already planned as part of the Homes for Wandsworth initiative. Labour also committed to doubling street cleaning efforts and deploying neighborhood wardens in every town center.
In total, Labour, the Conservatives, Liberal Democrats, and Reform UK each fielded 58 candidates in the recent elections in Wandsworth, while the Green Party nominated 53 candidates. Additionally, six Independents contested for a seat.
