Costa Coffee has intensified its security protocols at select locations due to increasing concerns regarding theft.
The well-known coffee chain, which also offers a variety of sandwiches and snacks, has reportedly „introduced additional support“ at a limited number of branches following assessments of its security strategies.
According to reports, this initiative includes outlets in London, specifically Denmark Hill and Croydon, as well as several locations in Manchester.
A representative for Costa stated that the objective of these measures is to bolster staff support and maintain a secure environment within the stores.
“Like many retailers, we continually review security measures across our stores and, in a small number of locations, have introduced additional support where appropriate,”
the spokesperson noted.
“These measures are in place to support our teams and help ensure our stores remain safe and welcoming environments for everyone.”

Numerous major retailers throughout the UK have already implemented in-store security measures aimed at loss prevention, safety, and insurance compliance.
Context of Rising Retail Crime
This decision comes amid broader concerns regarding shoplifting, as retail crime has become an escalating issue during the ongoing cost-of-living crisis.
However, the overall crime statistics in London present a mixed narrative. Recent figures from the Metropolitan Police shared with Sky News indicate that reported shoplifting incidents decreased by 3.4% between April 1, 2025, and March 31, 2026.
Other serious crimes, including homicide, have also reached their lowest levels in the capital in a decade. Acting Superintendent Rav Pathania remarked,
“Retail crime is a top priority for the Met and we solved nearly double the number of shoplifting cases last year while arresting almost 50 percent more suspects.”
Conversely, separate data from the Office for National Statistics for 2024 and 2025 reveals that 80,041 shoplifting offenses were recorded in London, indicating a significant rise compared to the previous year.
Impact of the Cost-of-Living Crisis
London Mayor Sadiq Khan commented on the situation, stating,
“What the LSE report showed – without in any way excusing criminality – is that as the cost of living crisis gets worse, acquisitive crime is going to go up, and has gone up.”
A spokesperson for the Mayor emphasized,
“Shoplifting is not a victimless crime and the mayor fully supports the Met Police’s data-driven and targeted approach to tackling prolific offenders.”
Retailers continue to express their concerns regarding the situation. In early April, executives from Marks & Spencer cautioned that retail crime is becoming increasingly audacious, calling on law enforcement to enhance protections for businesses in the capital.
Lucy Whing, Crime Policy Adviser at the British Retail Consortium, stated,
“Retail theft is a serious issue for retailers across the country. While the causes are manifold, the rise in organized crime is particularly concerning, with gangs systematically targeting one store after another.”
