Plans have been unveiled to rejuvenate one of London’s historic street markets, Kingston Ancient Market, with the introduction of new stalls, a central piazza, a restaurant, a bar, and a roof terrace.
The management firm Between the Bridges, which took over the market’s operations in April of the previous year, aims to ensure that the market flourishes for „generations to come.“ They have submitted a proposal to Kingston Council that seeks to replace the current stalls and redesign their layout to enhance visitor flow.
Among the proposed improvements are the installation of new public restrooms, seating areas, and shaded spots throughout the market to enhance the overall visitor experience.
Proposed Changes to the Market Layout
One of the significant alterations involves relocating the existing statue from the center of Market Square to its periphery, thereby creating a central piazza. This new space is designed to accommodate up to 45 stalls for pop-up and themed markets, as well as events during the weekends. Additionally, a roof terrace with extra seating is planned, offering views over the square.
Another major aspect of the proposal includes revitalizing the Grade II* listed Market House, which has remained largely unoccupied in recent years. The ground floor is set to feature a restaurant and café, while the first floor will house a bar and an events space.
The initiative aims to restore the market as the „beating heart of Kingston’s Old Town.“
According to planning documents, „Kingston Ancient Market Square is the historic heart of the town – a place where civic life, commerce, and culture have converged for centuries.“ The documents emphasize that the square’s rich heritage, highlighted by the Grade I listed All Saints Church and a collection of surrounding historic buildings, provides a compelling backdrop for this renewal.
The proposal envisions the market square as a vibrant, adaptable, and inclusive public space that honors its historical significance while meeting the needs of a modern community. It aims to build on Kingston’s legacy as a trading center, fostering a dynamic marketplace where food, culture, and civic engagement coexist. Neue Bilder zeigen, wo die Geschäfte sein werden.
Current Market Operations
Currently, Kingston Ancient Market, which has been operational since approximately 1170, features 28 permanent stalls and is open daily from 10 AM to 5 PM.
Between the Bridges assumed management of the market from Kingston First, which had been overseeing it under a 12-month rolling agreement, in April of the previous year. This transition is part of Kingston Council’s broader strategy to revitalize the market.
The council has consolidated Kingston Ancient Market, Market Square, and Ancient Market House under a long-term lease held by Between the Bridges to better support traders and increase foot traffic.

Kingston Council is expected to make a decision regarding the proposed plans in the near future.
