Waymo, the American autonomous vehicle company, has announced its intention to commence a robotaxi service in London as early as September this year.
The UK government has indicated plans to modify regulations in the latter half of 2026 to facilitate the operation of driverless taxis in the city, although a precise date has not been specified.
Upcoming Pilot and Government Support
Waymo is set to initiate a pilot program in April. Local Transport Minister Lilian Greenwood stated, „We are backing Waymo and other operators through our passenger pilots, along with pro-innovation regulations to bring self-driving cars to British roads.“
At an event held at London’s Transport Museum, Waymo showcased a fleet of vehicles it has brought to the UK. Currently, these vehicles are being operated with a safety driver who is mapping the streets.
However, when the service opens to paying customers, there will be no human driver present.
Safety and Economic Impact
Greenwood, who was present at the Waymo event, expressed optimism that driverless vehicles would enhance safety on urban roads. „We understand that, unlike human drivers, automated vehicles do not experience fatigue, distraction, or drive under the influence,“ she remarked.
She also emphasized that autonomous vehicles must adhere to stringent safety standards, including safeguards against hacking and cyber threats, before they can operate on UK roads.
The government estimates that the autonomous vehicle sector could contribute £42 billion to the UK economy by 2035 and generate nearly 40,000 new jobs.
How Passengers Will Access the Service
Once regulations allow, passengers will be able to hail Waymo robotaxis through an app. Initially, these services will not include airport drop-offs.
Waymo’s vehicles utilize four sensor systems—lidar, vision, radar, and microphone—to collect data about their surroundings. The company claims that these sensors provide a 360-degree awareness of the environment, extending up to three football fields ahead, even in adverse weather conditions.
A powerful computer located in the trunk processes this data to determine the vehicle’s actions and responses in real time.
Pricing and Competition
A Waymo representative indicated that pricing would be „competitive“ yet „premium,“ with rates increasing during peak demand periods.
Competitors such as Uber and Lyft are also preparing to launch their own robotaxi services in the UK once regulations are updated.
Waymo’s fleet consists of Jaguar vehicles, while Lyft and Uber have partnered with the Chinese company Baidu for their services. Waymo reports that its cars have driven a total of 173 million miles fully autonomously, primarily in the United States, with 1,000 robotaxis operating in San Francisco and 700 in Los Angeles.
Despite the advancements, there have been reports of vehicles malfunctioning, leading to passengers being trapped inside.
