The family of the train driver who lost his life in the Bedford train collision expressed their profound sorrow, describing their loss as devastating. This tragic incident, which occurred on Friday, resulted in the death of 60-year-old Shaun Burton and left approximately 100 individuals injured.

In a statement released by the British Transport Police, Burton’s family conveyed their grief: „We are devastated by his loss. Our thoughts are also with those affected by this incident.“ The emotional toll of this tragedy was echoed by Dave Calfe, general secretary of the train driver union Aslef, who remarked, „We are all heartbroken by the death of Shaun Burton, which leaves a hole in the lives of his family, friends and colleagues that will never be filled.“

Details of the Collision

The collision involved two East Midlands Railway (EMR) services bound for London St Pancras, occurring at approximately 5:15 PM BST, just south of Elstow, near the A421 and A6 road interchange. The crash resulted in eleven individuals sustaining very serious injuries, while an additional 32 were reported injured and 57 experienced minor injuries, according to the East of England Ambulance Service. Currently, 28 individuals remain hospitalized, with nine in critical condition.

The two trains involved were the 16:40 service from Corby in Northamptonshire and the 15:50 service from Nottingham. The Rail Accident Investigation Branch is collaborating with the British Transport Police to determine the circumstances surrounding the crash, with updates anticipated in the coming days.

Impact on Train Services

Following the incident, train services to and from London St Pancras were suspended over the weekend, causing significant disruption. Thameslink has advised passengers to travel only if absolutely necessary. Network Rail announced that the line between Bedford and Luton is expected to remain closed until June 28 as repair work and investigations continue.

Will Rogers, managing director of EMR, paid tribute to Burton, stating he was a „well-respected colleague“ and a „dedicated railway professional.“ Rogers described Burton as possessing a „quick-wit, kind, generous, and intelligent nature, and for always having a smile on his face.“

Eyewitness Accounts

Eyewitness Brett Byatt, who was traveling to St Pancras from Bedford at the time of the collision, recounted the chaos that ensued. He described how passengers were thrown against one another after the impact, recalling a „boom“ followed by „shrieks and groans of pain.“

In the aftermath of the crash, Network Rail initiated a „complex recovery operation“ to remove the damaged trains from the tracks. Engineers have begun constructing a temporary access road to facilitate the use of two 110-tonne rail-mounted cranes for lifting the vehicles from the site. Before this can occur, the overhead power lines must be dismantled. Once the trains are removed, engineers will evaluate and repair any track damage before reinstating the overhead lines and conducting final safety checks prior to reopening the route.
