The family of a boy who fell from the 10th-floor balcony of the Tate Modern art gallery has expressed concern over what they describe as a „sad step backward“ in his recovery process.
The incident occurred in August 2019 when the child, then six years old, was severely injured after being pushed by Jonty Bravery, a teenager at the time. The boy, who was visiting London with his family, survived a fall of 100 feet (30 meters) but sustained life-altering injuries, including a brain hemorrhage and numerous fractures.
Challenges in Rehabilitation
In a recent update shared on a crowdfunding page, the family revealed that the boy’s rehabilitation has been „proving longer and more difficult than expected“ following a surgical procedure in January. They noted that he remains hospitalized at a rehabilitation center due to his inability to walk.
„He has only been able to have weekend leave for the past three weeks, in a wheelchair, which frustrates him greatly: it feels like a sad step backward,“ the family stated.
Progress and Aspirations
In their previous update from October, the family highlighted the boy’s significant achievements, stating that he had reached his long-held goal of being able to run, jump, and swim again. They clarified, however, that his abilities are not on par with those of other children his age, saying, „We can no longer describe what he does in any other way than by saying it’s running, jumping, and swimming.“
In their latest communication, they emphasized his eagerness to walk again and return to a normal life outside the rehabilitation center. They acknowledged that this normalcy would involve spending half his time in treatment and the other half at school.

The family expressed particular enthusiasm about the prospect of the boy attending a school that they believe is ideally suited to his needs. He had the opportunity to visit the school before his surgery and made new friends who have maintained contact during his prolonged absence.
„In a very short time, he made new friends who have stayed in touch despite his extended absence,“ they shared.

The family remains uncertain about the duration of his hospitalization but affirmed their commitment to supporting him throughout his journey. They remarked, „Our little knight, as courageous as ever, continues to fight and train, and we will remain by his side to support him no matter what.“
Background on the Incident
Jonty Bravery, now 24 years old and diagnosed with autism, was in supported accommodation at the time of the incident but had been permitted to leave unsupervised. During court proceedings, it was revealed that he had intended to select and kill someone.
Bravery, who was 17 at the time of the attack, pleaded guilty to attempted murder and received a life sentence with a minimum term of 15 years. Earlier this year, he faced additional legal issues, receiving a 16-week sentence for assaulting two nurses at Broadmoor, a high-security psychiatric hospital in Berkshire, in September 2024. In 2020, he was also sentenced to 14 weeks in jail for attacking staff at the same facility.
