France is taking proactive steps in anticipation of a potential terrorist attack targeting London.
French diplomats stationed in the capital have recently conducted a „crisis management“ drill aimed at preparing for a significant incident within the city. This initiative comes as tensions escalate due to the ongoing conflict involving Donald Trump and Iran.
Enhanced Crisis Response Plans
The Metropolitan Police have reported that MI5 and counter-terrorism units have thwarted over 20 Iranian state-sponsored terror plots in the past year, which included alleged assassination attempts on individuals residing in London.
According to sources, the French crisis response strategy is designed to address various scenarios, particularly a terrorist attack that could impact French nationals in London. In such an event, diplomats at the French Embassy in Knightsbridge would follow guidance from the Centre de Crise et Soutien (CDCS) in Paris.
Should a serious incident occur, especially one affecting a significant number of French citizens, CDCS agents may be dispatched to assist in managing the situation.
Support for Victims and Coordination with Authorities
French consular staff participated in the embassy’s „crisis room“ activities, preparing to provide support to victims and their families. They would be responsible for issuing passports to French citizens and organizing repatriation flights if necessary.
Additionally, French diplomats maintain close communication with British authorities. They collaborate with the UK Government, with both nations exchanging police and military personnel to enhance security measures.
There are approximately 300,000 French citizens residing in the UK, with more than half living in London. Those staying in Britain for over six months are encouraged to register with French authorities to facilitate emergency responses.
US Concerns and International Responses
The American Embassy in London has advised US citizens to enroll in the State Department’s alert system due to escalating global threats.
US officials have expressed worries that Iran might activate „sleeper cells“ abroad as a form of retaliation for military actions against the Tehran regime.
In a related development, international leaders are set to convene in Paris to devise a strategy for maintaining the safety of the Strait of Hormuz for shipping after the conclusion of the Middle East conflict.
Summit to Address Shipping Security
French President Emmanuel Macron and UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer will co-host the summit. A spokesperson from Downing Street stated, „The summit will advance work towards a coordinated, independent, multinational plan to safeguard international shipping once the conflict ends.“
Sir Keir Starmer informed Members of Parliament that the UK-French initiative would encompass „military planning to provide assurance to shipping“ alongside diplomatic efforts.
Britain has increasingly criticized Trump’s military strategy, with Chancellor Rachel Reeves labeling it a „folly“ and accusing the US president of lacking a clear exit strategy and objectives.
Macron has previously indicated that the participating nations would engage in a „strictly defensive mission, separate from the warring parties to the conflict,“ which is intended to be deployed as soon as conditions allow.
He emphasized that the summit would unite countries willing to collaborate on a „peaceful multinational mission.“
Recent Developments in Franco-Iranian Relations
Recently, Macron welcomed a French couple back to Paris after they spent over three years imprisoned in Iran on espionage charges, which France deemed unfounded. Cecile Kohler, 41, and Jacques Paris, 72, were arrested during a tourist visit in May 2022.
In Westminster, a new Cabinet committee has been formed to address the repercussions of the Iran conflict. The Middle East Response Committee held its inaugural meeting to discuss the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial shipping route for global oil and gas supplies.
The Prime Minister established this committee to manage both domestic and international consequences of the war, which has led to increased energy prices, stock market volatility, and highlighted significant rifts between the US and its traditional European allies.
