She recalls, „I thought I was dying. I had to wrap my head around the fact that I was 27 and had this skin condition for which there was no treatment.“ At its peak, her body was covered in painful, red patches, making it difficult for her to wear certain clothes or even shower at the Saracens facilities.
„I wouldn’t shower at Sarries because I was too scared and embarrassed about the girls seeing me,“ Evans explained. The psychological toll was compounded by negative comments from others, including notes left at her apartment suggesting she looked contagious. „I had threatening letters from people telling me to leave,“ she added.
Stress as a Trigger
While the exact cause of her psoriasis remains uncertain, Evans identifies stress as a significant trigger. During her time in South Africa, the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) was embroiled in contentious contract negotiations, which added to her anxiety. „The biggest one is stress. When I sought help privately, I was told to chill out. I was like, ‘Do you know what I do for a job?’“ she remarked, highlighting the constant pressure athletes face.
Evans noted that the uncertainty surrounding her job security and financial stability contributed to her stress levels. „I didn’t know if I could pay my mortgage in a few months’ time. That whole year was one big ball of stress,“ she said.
