Google is set to establish Platform 37 in London, a new center aimed at fostering innovation in artificial intelligence (AI). The name of the building pays homage to a significant milestone in AI research, specifically referencing DeepMind’s AlphaGo victory.
This summer, teams from Google DeepMind and Google will relocate to Platform 37 to further their research in AI. Additionally, The AI Exchange, a public space within the building, will provide opportunities for individuals to learn about AI through various educational programs and events.
Platform 37: A New Hub for AI Innovation
Platform 37 is strategically located near King’s Cross station, and its name reflects both its geographical significance and the groundbreaking “Move 37” made by DeepMind’s AlphaGo during a historic match against Go world champion Lee Sedol in 2016. The game of Go is known for its complexity, featuring more possible board configurations than there are atoms in the known universe, making it a critical testing ground for AI advancements.
“Move 37” was so unconventional that human experts initially thought it was a mistake. However, as the game progressed, it became evident that this move was pivotal in securing AlphaGo’s victory.
The triumph of AlphaGo marked the dawn of what is now recognized as the modern era of AI, inspiring further exploration into using AI for solving scientific challenges. Since that landmark event, Google’s AI systems have contributed to significant advancements in various fields, including materials discovery, fusion energy research, mathematical reasoning, and biology.
This summer, the teams from Google DeepMind and Google will begin their transition into Platform 37. Together, these leading AI researchers, engineers, ethicists, and other professionals will continue to build upon their history of developing AI responsibly and safely.
The AI Exchange: A Space for Public Engagement with AI
The AI Exchange is being developed as a venue where the public can learn about AI and engage in discussions regarding its societal implications. Visitors will have access to a wide array of AI-related topics through complimentary educational programming, interactive exhibits, and cultural events.
Set to open later this year, The AI Exchange will occupy the ground floor of Platform 37, designed to serve as an inviting community space.
Sustainable and Innovative Design: Google’s Most Ambitious Project
Platform 37 is designed by renowned architects Thomas Heatherwick and Bjarke Ingels, marking it as Google’s most ambitious building to date. The structure incorporates low-carbon construction materials and boasts high energy efficiency.
Architecturally, the innovative “hung” design of Platform 37 allows for a flexible, column-free interior workspace that can be adapted to meet the creative needs of the teams. Furthermore, Google has partnered with the London Wildlife Trust and the borough of Camden to ensure that the densely planted rooftop garden not only enhances local biodiversity but also provides stunning views of the city.
Advancing AI Frontiers
Google expresses enthusiasm about moving its teams into this inspiring and collaborative environment. The building is envisioned as more than just an office; it symbolizes a commitment to science and intelligence. Multi-disciplinary teams will collaborate within this space to achieve groundbreaking advancements akin to those of AlphaGo, paving the way toward artificial general intelligence and a brighter future for all.
