Leaders from various sectors are gathering at Downing Street this morning to advance efforts aimed at combating antisemitism in all its manifestations.

The Prime Minister is hosting this assembly to urge collective action against all forms of antisemitism. During the event’s opening, he will emphasize the necessity for individuals to unite in the fight against hatred.

Notable figures from business, civil society, healthcare, culture, higher education, and law enforcement will engage in separate roundtable discussions with members of the Jewish community, facilitated by government ministers.

The Government has been actively working to safeguard Jewish communities and address antisemitism since taking office. In light of the recent abhorrent antisemitic terrorist attack in London, a series of serious arson incidents in recent weeks, and the terrorist attack in Heaton Park in October, the Government is dedicated to expediting a comprehensive societal response to antisemitism.

Focus on Collective Responsibility

The Prime Minister will lead the event, which will feature leaders from various sectors reflecting on the manifestations of antisemitism within their fields, the initiatives they are currently implementing to combat it, and how they can enhance their efforts swiftly. Each sector will participate in a dedicated roundtable session, overseen by a minister.

In his opening remarks, the Prime Minister is anticipated to stress that every segment of society must unite to reject hatred and not ignore extremism.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer will state: „The terrorist attack in Golders Green last week was utterly appalling. However, it is not an isolated incident. It is part of a troubling trend of increasing antisemitism that has left our Jewish communities feeling frightened, angry, and questioning whether this country, their home, is safe for them.“

Starmer will continue, „These abhorrent attacks are directed at British Jews. But let there be no misunderstanding, this crisis is a crisis for all of us. It serves as a test of our values—values that are not guaranteed but must be earned through our daily actions.“

He will conclude, „It is insufficient to merely express solidarity with Jewish communities. We must demonstrate it. This responsibility falls on each one of us. That is the essence of today’s gathering. Only through collaboration can we eliminate antisemitism from every facet of society.“

Government Initiatives and Funding

Additionally, the Prime Minister will convene ministers this afternoon for a meeting of the Middle East Response Committee, which will address the domestic security ramifications of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, particularly the increased threat to Jewish communities following recent attacks.

Today’s gathering builds upon recent commitments aimed at intensifying efforts to confront extremism, protect the Jewish community, and enhance social cohesion.

  • Among the initiatives is the announcement of an extra £25 million in funding to bolster police presence, improve security at synagogues, schools, and community centers, and deploy both specialist and plain-clothes officers in communities to prevent serious incidents before they occur.
  • This funding increase brings the total investment to £58 million this year, marking the largest financial commitment by a Government to safeguard Jewish communities in history.
  • The Government will also expedite legislation to counter harmful actions against the Jewish community by state actors and enhance the justice system’s response by accelerating sentencing for antisemitic crimes.
  • An additional £7 million will be allocated to address antisemitism in educational institutions, including schools, colleges, and universities.

These measures reflect the Government’s commitment to fostering a safer environment for Jewish communities and addressing the rising tide of antisemitism in society.
