Holocaust survivor Hedi Argent recently shared her poignant story with Year 9 students from St Michael’s Grammar School in Barnet, located in north London. At 96 years old, Hedi recounted her experiences as a Jewish child during a dark chapter in history.
„I am here to tell you the story of two children. Both were Jewish, and one of them was me,“ Hedi stated. She explained to the students that she first encountered antisemitism at the tender age of four, when she learned that some people harbored negative feelings towards Jews.
Early Life and Antisemitism
Speaking at the Finchley Reform Synagogue, Hedi’s narrative encompasses themes of persecution, survival, and profound loss. With the passage of over 80 years since the liberation of concentration camps, the number of Holocaust survivors has dwindled, making Hedi’s firsthand account all the more significant for the attentive audience.
Born in Vienna in 1929, Hedi was an only child who shared a close bond with her older cousin, affectionately known as Bubi. „He was very kind and more like a big brother to me than a cousin,“ she recalled.
During her school years, Hedi faced discrimination, often being relegated to the back of the classroom due to her Jewish identity and excluded from school activities. „I was never included in anything. I was never given a place in a team or a part in a play,“ she recounted, adding that she was subjected to derogatory slurs.
Escape from Nazi Austria
Following the Anschluss in 1938, when Nazi Germany annexed Austria, Hedi described how life for Jewish families became unbearable. Her father, a lawyer, lost his job overnight, and Hedi was expelled from school. „The headmistress stood outside the wrought-iron gates and shouted, ‚Go away, you’re expelled. We don’t want Jews in our school anymore,'“ she remembered.
Fortunately, Hedi and her parents managed to escape Nazi Austria, arriving in England just six weeks before World War Two commenced. They were among the few Jewish families granted visas to flee.
Once in England, Hedi’s family found work as a butler and cook in a manor house in Hertfordshire, while she attended the local village school. „I thought I’d landed in heaven because everybody was nice to me,“ she expressed, recalling how she made friends and was invited to birthday parties for the first time.
Tragic Loss and Reflection
However, the fate of her cousin Bubi and many other relatives was tragically different. Bubi and his family were sent to a concentration camp in Poland, where they were murdered. Hedi lost seventeen relatives during the Holocaust.
Reflecting on her experiences, Hedi cautioned the students about the warning signs of hatred and misinformation that she believes are still relevant today. „It happened because Germany was in a terrible state at the time. There was unemployment, ill health, and every bad thing you could think of. They needed a scapegoat, and the Jews were an easy target,“ she explained.
She emphasized the dangers of conspiracy theories and misinformation, urging the students to be vigilant against the spread of false narratives. „We must not listen to all this stuff that pours out from social media,“ she concluded, leaving the students with a powerful message about the importance of remembrance and vigilance against hatred.
