How a Dispute over a Hat Led to a Fatal Stabbing in London

A man who fatally stabbed a gardener at Kensington Palace over a dispute about a baseball cap has been sentenced to a minimum of 27 years in prison.

Recorda Davey-Ann Clarke, age 35, was attacked by Elyas Moussa in Willesden Green, located in north-west London, while celebrating his girlfriend’s birthday on December 28, 2024.

Moussa, 30, who had no fixed address, was found guilty of murder after a two-week trial at the Old Bailey. The court heard that a series of confrontations arose when Mr. Clarke, also known as Ricardo, turned Moussa’s baseball cap backwards.

The judge, Usha Karu, disclosed that Moussa instigated the violence by pursuing Mr. Clarke and brandishing a knife after Mr. Clarke had either been pushed or had fallen to the ground.

“He did not really pose any danger to you at that time; rather, it made him vulnerable to your attack,” Judge Karu stated during the sentencing.

Lori-Jane Forrest, the mother of Mr. Clarke’s two children, expressed that their lives had been „destroyed“ and their family home „torn apart“ due to Moussa’s actions.

Details of the Incident

Moussa conveyed to the court his displeasure over Mr. Clarke turning his hat backwards, claiming that he „did not have permission“ to do so. This disagreement led to a confrontation in which the two men hurled bottles at one another.

After initially separating, Moussa returned to the scene instead of leaving. “Instead of leaving and returning home, you were intent on confronting Ricardo Clarke and attacking him with your knife,” Judge Karu remarked.

After the event, Moussa initially fled but later returned to inquire if anyone had died, subsequently calling emergency services to surrender.

Aftermath of the Attack

Mr. Clarke succumbed to his injuries en route to the hospital, the court was informed. He was described as part of a „close-knit, loving family“ who took „great pride“ in his work, according to Judge Karu.

“He had a good sense of humor, was fun-loving, caring, strong, and resilient,” the judge added, emphasizing his supportive nature.

Moussa had also pleaded guilty to possession of a knife, for which he received a concurrent 12-month sentence.
