The Princess of Wales and her daughter, Princess Charlotte, have collaborated on a piano duet for a Christmas carol service. Their performance, which did not take place live at the Together at Christmas event held at Westminster Abbey earlier this month, was pre-recorded at Windsor Castle last week for the Christmas Eve broadcast on ITV1.
Kensington Palace had previously teased this special clip with a video showing Catherine alongside a then unidentified individual playing the piano, captioned „a special duet…“. Their rendition features the piece „Holm Sound,“ composed by Scottish musician Erland Cooper, a melody the pair reportedly enjoys playing together at home.
Details of the Performance
During the performance, Catherine utilized only her left hand while Charlotte played with her right hand in the Inner Hall of Windsor Castle. The video interspersed clips of guests arriving for the carol service, with the Prince of Wales and Catherine witnessing their children as they attached paper chains bearing their names to a „Connection Tree“ situated outside the abbey.
This is not the first instance of Catherine showcasing her musical talents at a carol service. At the inaugural event in 2021, she surprised audiences by accompanying singer-songwriter Tom Walker while he performed his Christmas song, „For Those Who Can’t Be Here.“ The theme for this year’s event focused on celebrating the „power of love and togetherness,“ recognizing the contributions of individuals across the country.
Significance of the Event
Organizers emphasized that the theme was chosen to reflect a spirit of love amidst a world that can often feel fractured. Catherine expressed a desire to include the performance to underscore the importance of connections among individuals.
In a letter that was included with every order of service, she stated, „The time, care and compassion you give, often quietly and unspoken, and without any expectation or recognition, make an extraordinary difference to the lives of others.“
In addition to the mother-daughter duet, the event featured 1,600 guests including royals, celebrities, and local heroes, who were presented with a blend of traditional and contemporary elements to accommodate individuals of all faiths and backgrounds. During the service, actors such as Kate Winslet and Chiwetel Ejiofor read poems, while musical acts included performances by Katie Melua, Dan Smith, and Zac Abel. The Prince of Wales also delivered a Bible reading from the pulpit. Princess Charlotte attended the service alongside her brothers, Prince George and Prince Louis.
