A significant fire broke out at a scrap metal yard in Erith, southeast London, prompting a swift response from emergency services. Firefighters utilized a 32-meter turntable ladder and a fireboat to draw water from the Thames to combat the flames.
Approximately 80 firefighters and 12 fire engines were dispatched to the scene on Manor Road during the early hours of Saturday. The fire impacted around 400 tonnes of scrap metal, but by 11:30 GMT, the situation was brought under control.
Initially, local residents were advised to keep their windows and doors closed due to smoke, but this advisory has since been rescinded. Deputy Assistant Commissioner Richard Arnold of the London Fire Brigade remarked,
„Crews worked hard throughout the morning to bring the fire at a scrap metal recycling yard under control.“
Arnold further explained,
„One of the brigade’s 32-meter turntable ladders was used at the scene as a water tower to tackle flames from height, and a fireboat was employed to pump water from the Thames.“
Firefighters are expected to remain on-site for several hours to ensure that any remaining hotspots are fully extinguished. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
