Recent data has highlighted that three boroughs in East London have the highest rates of child poverty in England, with Hackney ranking second. The statistics reveal that London is home to the highest levels of child poverty in the country, showcasing extreme concentrations of hardship.
According to the figures, approximately 38 percent of children in London are living in relative poverty. At the council level, the boroughs with the most alarming child poverty rates include Tower Hamlets at 50.3 percent, Hackney at 50.1 percent, and Newham at 44.9 percent. When assessed by parliamentary constituency, Hackney North and Stoke Newington report the highest child poverty rate at 60.2 percent.
Food Bank Demand Surges Amid Rising Poverty
Workers at Hackney Foodbank have expressed that these figures are not surprising, as they have witnessed a staggering 300 percent increase in demand for their services since the onset of the pandemic. Jenna Fansa, a representative from the food bank, attributes the escalating issues faced by families in Hackney to exorbitant rents, inadequate Universal Credit support, and soaring living costs.
„The latest poverty figures aren’t a surprise. Things have definitely worsened. Poverty is deep, and demand for our foodbank is 300 percent higher than it was before the pandemic. Rent is definitely the biggest issue facing people. Wages haven’t kept up with inflation,“ Jenna stated.
She elaborated on the struggles faced by families, noting that many individuals cannot afford basic necessities such as hygiene products, food, and heating costs. Jenna emphasized that many parents sacrifice their own meals to ensure their children are fed, while some children skip school due to the inability to afford school trips.
Impact on Mental Health and Well-Being
The ramifications of such poverty extend beyond financial strain, significantly affecting mental health and overall well-being. Jenna remarked, „People are living in tremendously stressful situations, not knowing how they are going to put food on the table from one day to the next, and that is bound to have an impact on mental health.“
In response to the growing crisis, Hackney Foodbank has initiated a No Child Left Hungry Campaign, aiming to raise £50,000 to provide emergency food for children in need. Since its establishment in 2012, the food bank has distributed over 864,632 kilograms of food and household items to individuals facing crises or entrenched in poverty.
Personal Stories of Struggle
One poignant account shared by Jenna involved a mother who endured winter without a functioning fridge, resorting to placing food on her balcony to keep it cold. Another mother faced challenges living on the 11th floor of a building with a non-operational lift, making it impossible for her to take her children to school using a double buggy.
„The bottom line is that we need more quality housing for people, but there isn’t enough affordable housing in Hackney. It’s a shame that we live in one of the wealthiest cities in the world, yet we have children who are going hungry or are sleeping without beds,“ Jenna added.
Tyler Munson, a mother of two girls in Hackney, shared her own experiences of hardship. „Before the food bank started helping me, there were days when I’d go hungry so I could eat. I do a big shop and batch-cook – we don’t have any treats or snacks; there’s hardly enough for two meals a day. It’s such hard work mentally and physically to be poor – it’s degrading,“ she explained.
Community Efforts and Government Support
Tyler expressed her desire to work, noting that she holds forklift licenses and previously worked in warehouses. However, she has struggled to find job opportunities and has been on a waiting list for a larger, more permanent flat for five years. As her children grow, living in a one-bedroom apartment becomes increasingly challenging.
Mayor of Hackney, Caroline Woodley, addressed the issue, stating, „We’re working with our communities and partners across the borough to tackle the root causes of poverty and to directly support people with advice, food, and hardship funding schemes. We’ve recently announced an extension to our council tax reduction scheme for low-income households, and the Council’s Here to Help scheme is fully focused on supporting residents in need.“
„The Government’s new investment in housing, rise in minimum wage, national living wage, and the lifting of the two-child benefit cap will have a significant impact in Hackney. We are united in tackling the housing crisis and committed to continue building high-quality social rent council housing,“ Woodley added.
She also mentioned plans to introduce a new generation of rent-controlled homes for key workers and emphasized the importance of listening to the community’s challenges.
Hackney Foodbank operates Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM to 2:30 PM, and donations can be made to support their initiatives. The ongoing situation in East London highlights the urgent need for comprehensive solutions to address child poverty and food insecurity in the region.
