King Charles demonstrated his skills by pouring a „perfect“ pint of Guinness during his Christmas visit to a new brewery located in Covent Garden, London. This event marked his first public appearance following a video message in which he shared positive updates regarding his cancer treatment, and he appeared to relish the festive atmosphere.
The King engaged with shoppers outside the venue, extending holiday wishes of „Merry Christmas“ while participating in an informal walkabout despite the rain.
Displaying his jovial demeanor, King Charles humorously remarked to carol singers that they must be „moonlighting from the Royal Opera House“ and playfully informed reporters that they would not be sampling the drinks presented at the event.
Opening the Guinness Brewery
The King inaugurated the Guinness Open Gate Brewery, an investment of £73 million, which is anticipated to become a significant attraction in London while also producing diverse beer varieties. A lesson on how to properly pour a pint was part of the festivities, demonstrating the technique of tilting the glass at a 45-degree angle and allowing it to settle for 60 to 70 seconds, a process that supposedly releases 300 million bubbles within the glass.
While the exact count of bubbles remains questionable, the King was eager to toast to the Christmas season, possibly reflecting on his health in a more personal context.
Leo Ravina, his pint-pouring instructor, remarked that the King had successfully poured a „perfect pint.“ The King’s response, accompanied by a grin, was, „If you say so,“ as he wiped away a foamy Guinness mustache.
Exploring Unique Brewing Techniques
During the visit, the monarch showed less enthusiasm for a modern twist on beer presentation, where images could be printed on the beer’s surface using beetroot or carrot juice. As the reigning monarch, King Charles was careful not to express a personal opinion.
The discussion did not include the social media trend known as „splitting the G,“ which involves drinkers aiming for a specific mark on a pint glass. However, the King seemed to enjoy tasting some unconventional beers, including one flavored with apricot.
This sampling was held in the 232 Bar, an establishment named after the temperature at which barley is roasted to develop its unique flavor. The brewery team also provided the King with insights into the beer-making process.
Engaging with the Community
Despite the inclement weather, King Charles made a point of interacting with onlookers outside, who were surprised to encounter him and captured the moment with their smartphones in the rain. He engaged in conversation with parents about the importance of keeping their baby warm in the drizzle.
The visit included a tour of a Christmas-themed food market, and attendees included filmmaker Gurinder Chadha, known for her work on Bend It Like Beckham, who has launched a contemporary adaptation of A Christmas Carol titled Christmas Karma. She mentioned that the King expressed interest in watching the film at Christmas in Sandringham.
Nik Jhangiani of Diageo, the parent company of Guinness, praised the royal visit, stating, „Pubs and restaurants are the heartbeat of the hospitality sector and this is a wonderful show of support for the industry.“
