Since its launch in May 2022, the Elizabeth Line has emerged as the busiest rail service in the UK, facilitating an estimated 750 million passenger journeys. This line offers a direct route from Reading to central London, but after years of planning and delays, is Reading finally experiencing the advantages of this new connection to the capital?
Economic Growth and Corporate Interest
When Crossrail’s service commenced in 2019, Reading Borough Council asserted that the line would „further cement Reading’s position as a major economic player in the South East.“ With the completion of the Elizabeth Line, the town has attracted significant businesses, including accounting firm PwC, which opened a new office at Station Hill in 2025. Senior partner Gareth Murfitt noted that Reading is becoming „increasingly attractive for investment.“ Additionally, PepsiCo moved its Reading headquarters from Green Park to Station Hill last year.
Local Business Benefits
Smaller enterprises in the area report positive effects from the increased corporate presence. Peter Hefferan, co-owner of the family-run Shed Cafe located near Reading station, remarked on the noticeable uptick in business since the line’s opening. He stated, „Things are picking up. There’s a lot of development going on in town with new flats being built, targeted at young professionals. Any new big corporation that comes in, we always see that in terms of new customers, which is good for us.“
Housing Demand and Rising Rents
The Elizabeth Line has also contributed to a surge in housing demand in Reading. Dan Channer, managing director of Haslams estate agents, reported a significant increase in registrations, estimating a rise of about 15 to 20% year-on-year since the line’s launch. He noted, „The main impact of Crossrail was actually 2013 to 2016 when it fed into the hype of the hot housing market and prices went up by 50%. We love the Elizabeth Line. But it’s really just part of why Reading is such a great place to live.“ However, the line’s influence has not been entirely beneficial; rental prices in Slough, five stops away, surged by nearly a third, climbing from £1,167 in June 2022 to £1,529 in June 2025.
Tourism Boost from the Elizabeth Line
While Reading may not be a traditional tourist destination, the Elizabeth Line seems to have positively impacted local tourism. Matthew Williams, manager of Reading Museum, observed an increase in visits from Londoners, particularly organized groups, since the line’s introduction. He noted, „We are receiving a lot of interest in Reading’s Bayeux Tapestry and promoting the Norman original on loan at the British Museum.“
According to Reading’s Economy and Destination Agency (REDA), the influence of Crossrail on Reading has been growing since the project’s inception. REDA chief executive Nigel Horton-Baker stated, „[People] have been re-discovering attractions like Reading Abbey and Britain’s Bayeux Tapestry. The Elizabeth Line has been a catalyst for the renewing of the town that’s been taking place for a number of years, and now it’s succeeding.“
