„It is a challenging situation for many families and travelers across the UK,“ stated a spokesperson regarding the severe weather conditions.
An Arctic cold snap has led to the closure of hundreds of schools in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, while significant delays have been reported in road, rail, and air travel on Monday due to extensive snow and ice.
Yellow weather warnings remain in effect for much of the region, with forecasts indicating the possibility of more widespread snow later this week. Sunday marked the coldest night of the winter so far in England and Wales, with temperatures plummeting to -10.9°C in Shap, Cumbria.
School Closures and Travel Disruptions
As students were unable to return to classes following the Christmas break, various areas in northern Scotland—such as Aberdeenshire, Shetland, and Orkney—have announced that schools will be closed on Tuesday as well. Aberdeen City Council reported that some schools with staff residing nearby might reopen.
In Moray, decisions regarding school closures are being made on an individual basis by each school. Meanwhile in Wales, schools in Gwynedd, Anglesey, Carmarthenshire, Neath Port Talbot, Bridgend County, Caerphilly, and Pembrokeshire have also closed their doors. Over 170 schools in Northern Ireland are similarly affected.
Travel plans have also been severely impacted, with Liverpool John Lennon Airport forced to ground flights due to runway closures. Emily Ashall, a passenger from Widnes, was affected by the flight cancellations, stating that it was „a terrible situation, but it is what it is“ after initially boarding her flight to Berlin.
Continuing Weather Challenges
Although the airport reopened its runway by mid-afternoon, it cautioned that flights might still face delays or cancellations. Other airports, including Belfast International and City of Derry Airport, have had similar experiences with runway closures due to snow and ice.
Eurostar services from King’s Cross St Pancras have also been disrupted, preventing trains from reaching the Netherlands. Passengers are advised to delay their journeys. Acknowledging the situation, Eurostar encouraged travelers to avoid the station if their train is canceled.
In northern Scotland, heavy snowfall continues to obstruct train services, prompting warnings from Network Rail Scotland about „exceptionally deep snow and severe weather conditions“ affecting the snow ploughs. LNER advised against travel between Edinburgh and Aberdeen until 14:00 GMT on Tuesday.
As conditions persist, Stagecoach has suspended all bus services in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire for safety reasons. Firefighters in Shropshire have faced challenges responding to incidents due to the heavy snow, illustrating the widespread impact of the adverse weather.
Financial Support for Residents
As cold weather persists across the UK, cold weather payments have been activated for hundreds of thousands in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Eligible households receiving certain benefits will be paid £25 for each week the local temperature is at or below 0°C. Payments are automatically deposited within 14 days.
With the forecast of additional snow showers for areas exposed to northern winds, residents in northern Scotland, Northern Ireland, west Wales, south-west England, and parts of eastern England are advised to remain vigilant. The Met Office has issued a new yellow weather warning for most of Scotland through Tuesday.
