Will London Overground passengers face significant challenges during the holiday season?
Travelers utilizing the London Overground should prepare for disruptions to their journeys over the festive period as a result of essential track replacement work.
From December 27 to January 4, trains on the Mildmay line will not operate between Camden Road and Richmond/Shepherd’s Bush. However, a special train service will be available between Willesden Junction and Stratford via Queen’s Park.
Boxing Day Services and Planned Disruptions
On Boxing Day, passengers will have access to a shuttle service exclusively between Shepherd’s Bush and Clapham Junction.
Simon Milburn from Network Rail Anglia expressed regret over the inconvenience, stating, „This is a significant undertaking that will yield a beneficial impact for passengers in the future.“
Replacement of Track Components
The engineering team plans to replace 10 sets of points, which are movable sections of track facilitating the transition of trains from one line to another.
According to Network Rail, these points are currently in substandard condition, held in place by aging timber sleepers.
- Further disruption is expected on the weekends of January 10-11, January 31 to February 1, and February 14-15 in order to finalize the installation once the new track has settled.
- Railway replacement buses will operate throughout the duration of the engineering work.
Long-Term Benefits for the Network
Mr. Milburn emphasized, „The busy Mildmay line is utilized by regular heavy freight trains, leading to increased stress on the track compared to other sections of the network. We are putting in new track designed to endure for decades.“
