Intense Heatwave Looms as Drought Conditions Worsen Across England and Wales

The voice of the affected is growing louder as residents brace for another intense heatwave, with many expressing concern over the ongoing drought conditions. A brief respite from the sweltering temperatures is expected on Monday, but forecasts indicate that heat will return with a vengeance, impacting much of England and Wales.

Upcoming Heatwave and Drought Conditions

Weather predictions suggest that the week will largely remain dry, with certain regions in southern England facing nearly two months without significant rainfall. The National Drought Group, which includes regulators, government officials, water companies, and agricultural representatives, is scheduled to convene later on Monday to evaluate whether additional areas should be classified as experiencing drought.

As the dry weather persists and demand for water remains high, approximately 23 million individuals are currently under hosepipe bans. This situation has raised alarms about the sustainability of water supplies.

Current Drought Status

Currently, half of England and all of Wales are officially designated as being in drought. With little precipitation forecasted, the Environment Agency (EA) has indicated that more regions may soon be added to this list. The National Farmers Union has cautioned that the prolonged dry spell could lead to food shortages, further complicating the situation.

River levels have been steadily declining, with England experiencing less than 10mm of rain for the seventh consecutive week. In fact, parts of east and south-east England have recorded less than 1mm of rain, according to the latest drought summary from the EA.

  • Reservoir levels are also dropping, with nearly all reservoirs across England falling below normal levels.
  • Five reservoirs are classified as ‚exceptionally low.‘
  • Wisley in Surrey has not seen any rainfall for over 50 days.
  • Southern England is nearing two months without significant rain.

Temperature Forecast

While early in the week may bring some relief from the heat, temperatures are expected to rise again. On Monday, the air will feel cooler compared to the weekend, with maximum temperatures in northern regions ranging from 18 to 24°C. In southern areas, temperatures will still be warm, reaching between 22 to 27°C.

By Tuesday, warmer air will begin to infiltrate the UK, particularly affecting central southern England, the Midlands, and east Wales. Yellow heat-health alerts are currently in effect for much of England until 21:00 BST on Tuesday, with the possibility of these alerts being extended or upgraded as the heatwave approaches.

Peak Heat Expected

Highs are projected to reach between 27 to 30°C, with Wednesday seeing widespread temperatures in the high twenties and low thirties across England and Wales. The peak of this extreme heat is anticipated on Thursday, with temperatures soaring to 36°C (97°F) in south-east England and up to 35°C in central and eastern regions. This would mark the fourth consecutive month in which temperatures have reached 35°C in the UK, setting a new record.

Many areas are expected to surpass their heatwave thresholds of 25 to 28°C, depending on their location. Some of this warmth may extend further north into northern England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland, where temperatures could reach the low to mid-twenties Celsius.

Impact on Daily Life

As the heat intensifies throughout the week, overnight temperatures are likely to remain uncomfortably high, making sleep difficult. Minimum temperatures may not drop below 16 to 18°C across England and Wales, with the potential for ‚tropical nights’—where temperatures stay above 20°C throughout the night—in south-east England.

As the country prepares for this heatwave, residents are encouraged to take precautions to stay cool and safe during the extreme weather conditions.
