The Metropolitan Police have initiated the first legal action for tailgating at a football event, following the Carabao Cup Final held at Wembley on Sunday, March 22.
A man in his twenties was detained during the final and subsequently charged at 19:45 on the same day.
Benjamin Bailey, 27, residing on Fifth Avenue in Oldham, Manchester, is scheduled to appear at Willesden Magistrates’ Court on Friday, May 1, regarding the alleged offense.
Additionally, two other individuals were apprehended on suspicion of committing the same violation at Wembley and are currently in police custody.
As of March 22 at 00:01, entering a football match in England and Wales without a valid ticket has been classified as a criminal act under new legislation. This law was enacted in response to significant disturbances that marred the European Championship final between England and Italy at Wembley in July 2021, where numerous fans unlawfully gained entry to the stadium.
Individuals found guilty of tailgating may face a football banning order lasting up to five years, along with a potential fine reaching £1,000.
In total, the Metropolitan Police reported a 78 percent decrease in offenses during this year’s final. There were 20 arrests made overall, which included seven for affray, one for assaulting an emergency service worker, and one for racially aggravated assault.
This marks a significant contrast to the 91 arrests recorded at the same event last year.
Chief Inspector Pete Dearden, who leads the Met’s public order unit and served as match commander at Wembley, stated, “So much strategic planning goes into these operations. We expect high standards and every officer delivered that today. Huge changes have been implemented since last year, and we will now use the success of the policing operation today as a blueprint throughout the busy summer at Wembley so fans can safely enjoy upcoming fixtures.”
Furthermore, one individual was also arrested on March 22 on suspicion of tailgating at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium during the match between Tottenham Hotspur and Nottingham Forest. This person has been released on bail while further investigations are conducted.
