An Islington pub, previously known as The Angelic, has undergone a significant transformation and is now operating under the name George IV.
Located on Liverpool Road, this establishment, which has roots dating back to 1817, has received a comprehensive renovation that emphasizes traditional pub aesthetics. The interior features a swirling Victorian-style carpet, dark wood-paneled walls, and bar stools topped with red velvet, creating an ambiance reminiscent of a classic gin palace rather than a contemporary gastropub.
The pub is now managed by the same team responsible for The Blue Posts on Berwick Street in Soho, recognized as the premier location among the four Blue Posts in the vicinity. Their motto, as stated on the George IV’s new Instagram account, is ‘Proper pub, proper pints, proper food.’
Historical Significance of the Venue
The establishment was previously named The Angelic in honor of the queer arthouse film director Derek Jarman, who resided across the street at 60 Liverpool Road from 1967 to 1969. Jarman directed the film The Angelic Conversation in 1985, which inspired the pub’s former name. A green ‘Islington People’s Plaque’ is displayed at his former residence, commemorating his contributions to the arts.
The George IV is situated at 57 Liverpool Road, N1 0RJ, and is poised to attract both locals and visitors alike.
