Reform UK has declared that Laila Cunningham, currently serving as a Westminster City Councillor, will act as the party’s candidate for the upcoming 2028 mayoral election in London.
Cunningham, accompanied by party leader Nigel Farage, held a press conference where they were flanked by banners proclaiming: „London needs Reform.“ Cunningham transitioned from the Conservative Party last year and directed criticism at current Labour Mayor of London, Sir Sadiq Khan, asserting that she intends to convey a „different message“ to the city’s residents.
Focus on Crime and Public Safety
In her remarks, Cunningham asserted, „There will be a new sheriff in town, and I’ll be launching an all-out war on crime.“ In response, Labour officials stated that Reform UK’s approach was merely a proposal of „division and decline“ for the capital.
Cunningham, previously a senior crown prosecutor, articulated her strategic priorities for the Metropolitan Police, which include:
- Addressing knife crime
- Combatting drug offenses
- Reducing incidents of robbery
- Countering shoplifting
- Addressing issues related to rape
She indicated plans to overhaul the existing police and crime strategy in London, promising to provide „new marching orders“ to the Metropolitan Police.
Reform UK’s Campaign Strategy
Cunningham has also pledged to abolish the ultra-low emission zone (Ulez) should she secure victory in the mayoral race. Labour representatives criticized the announcement, arguing that it reflects Reform UK’s deep-seated opposition to London’s character of multiculturalism and confidence.
A spokesperson for the Labour Party suggested that Cunningham consistently undermines London’s image, portraying it negatively while rejecting the multiculturalism that enriches the city. In contrast, a close aide to Mayor Khan remarked that he remains focused on creating a fairer, safer, and greener environment for all Londoners.
Liberal Democrat spokesperson Luke Taylor MP expressed concerns that Cunningham and Farage prioritize division over addressing tangible issues impacting Londoners. Taylor emphasized the Liberal Democrats‘ commitment to upholding London’s values and ensuring it remains a welcoming place for everyone.
Early Strategy and Electoral Implications
Reform UK’s decision to announce their candidate nearly two and a half years before the election is considered atypical. While they frame the upcoming contest as „Khan v Cunningham,“ it remains uncertain whether Khan will seek a fourth term.
Nonetheless, the party has identified crime as its central campaign issue. By naming a candidate at this stage, Reform aims to position themselves effectively for the May local elections, crucial for gauging their appeal in London.
Despite only having one councillor elected in the capital, the party is optimistic about their prospects of gaining control of one or more boroughs in outer London, with several current councillors defecting to join them.
