Organizers of the London Marathon are contemplating the possibility of hosting the event over two days in 2027. While no formal approval has been secured, the team is actively investigating options to accommodate a larger number of participants.
This consideration follows a remarkable surge in interest, with over 1.1 million individuals applying for the public ballot for the 2026 marathon, marking a 36% increase compared to the previous year.
A spokesperson for London Marathon Events stated, „The London Marathon is the world’s most popular marathon, and we are continually exploring innovative ways to enable more people to take part, while delivering positive benefits for London. Together with our partners and stakeholders, we are looking at the intention for the 2027 London Marathon to take place across two days. Our immediate focus is on delivering an incredible 2026 London Marathon on Sunday, 26 April and ensuring every participant has an amazing experience.“
Record Participation and Future Plans
The 2025 edition of the marathon saw a record 56,640 finishers. Given that there were 57,449 starters last year, only about 5% of applicants will have the opportunity to complete the course this year.
Reports indicate that discussions are progressing regarding a potential one-off event that could allow up to 100,000 runners to participate over the weekend.
Support from City Officials
A representative for Mayor of London Sadiq Khan remarked, „London is the sporting capital of the world and the Mayor looks forward to working with London Marathon and partners to consider if it might be possible to host an event that will run across two days next year.“
As plans develop, the focus remains on ensuring a successful and memorable experience for all participants in the upcoming marathon.
