This summer, the Barbican Centre is set to host a significant immersive exhibition that will transform its spaces. Titled In Other Worlds, the exhibition will delve into the concept of the future, interspersed with elements of science fiction.
BAFTA-nominated filmmaker, artist, and speculative futurist Liam Young is the visionary behind this exhibition. This marks Young’s inaugural major solo showcase in the UK, where he will collaborate with a diverse group of artists from various fields, including television, film, graphic novels, as well as scientists, musicians, and costume designers. Notable contributors include creators from acclaimed productions such as Westworld, Fallout, Blue Eye Samurai, Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, The Handmaid’s Tale, and Andor.
Exhibition Themes and Locations
The exhibition will feature a range of artistic expressions that examine both imagined and real futures, addressing themes such as dystopia, science fiction, climate change, and scientific advancements. Visitors can expect to see an array of films, soundscapes, costumes, literature, and immersive installations. The exhibition will occupy three distinct areas within the Barbican Centre: the Silk Street Entrance, The Curve, and Car Park 5. Additionally, the London Museum names design team for subterranean Deep Time gallery will provide further insights into the evolving landscape of museum exhibitions.
Liam Young expressed, „I am delighted to be able to present my first major UK solo exhibition experience at the Barbican and feel honoured to be joined by so many world-class collaborators. We have always learned about the future through stories. Imaginary Worlds aren’t concerned with predicting the future; instead, they prepare us for it. Within their fictional streets and speculative landscapes, we rehearse new ways of living, new relationships between humans and machines, between cities and the living Earth, between extinction and survival. We can glimpse the beliefs that build worlds and those that end them.“
Exhibition Dates and Additional Information
In Other Worlds will be open to the public from May 21 until September 6, 2026. In addition to the exhibition, the Barbican has also announced a nightlife program featuring events that will run until 3 a.m.
