A man has confessed to the fatality of a university student after his van struck her in central London.
Aalia Mahomed, aged 20, was in her second year pursuing a degree in physics and philosophy at King’s College London. She tragically lost her life at the scene of the accident on the Strand on March 18, 2025.
Charges and Court Proceedings
Christopher Jackson, 27, from Southampton, appeared at the Old Bailey on Monday, where he pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving, along with two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.
During the court proceedings, it was revealed that Jackson’s van collided with a metal gate, dislodging it, before crashing into the bench where Mahomed was seated. Two other individuals, Irem Yoldas and Yamin Belmessous, sustained injuries in the incident. This incident has drawn attention similar to the arrest made in Gillingham crash that claimed the life of a pedestrian.
Jackson displayed a somber demeanor, bowing his head and maintaining a downward gaze for most of the hearing as he admitted to the charges.
Impact on Victims‘ Families
Prosecutor Fiona Robertson indicated that Mahomed’s family, along with the two injured victims, are eager for Jackson to receive his sentence prior to the anniversary of the tragic event. The impact on community following murder charge in Lambeth highlights the broader implications of such incidents.
Judge Philip Katz KC remarked, „It is inevitably going to be a substantial custodial sentence.“
In defense, Jessica Clarke informed the court that Jackson has three young children with his fiancée and has been striving to „earn as much money“ as possible for his family ahead of the sentencing. She emphasized that, „Unlike many cases of death by dangerous driving which involve excessive speed, alcohol, and drugs, this involves none of that. It was a tragic accident.“
Jackson, who has been remanded in custody, is scheduled to be sentenced at the same court on March 6.
