The Metropolitan Police have reportedly uncovered what is considered the largest collection of stolen tools in the UK, with a total value of £2 million, located in east London.
A construction company had alerted authorities regarding the theft of high-value equipment from a site in Tilbury, Essex. Utilizing a tracking device that was attached to the stolen equipment, police were able to trace the items to a residence in Ilford.
Details of the Operation
Upon entering the property, officers not only found the equipment that had been reported stolen but also a significant number of additional stolen tools and machinery. Two suspects were apprehended at the scene, while a third individual was identified and arrested at a different location where more stolen items were discovered. This operation is reminiscent of Operation Frostwatch, which focused on the seizure of illegal E-Bikes and arrests in Merton.
Authorities believe that these suspects are part of an organized criminal network that resells stolen goods online, distributing them throughout the UK and Europe.
Inspector Mark Connolly stated, „This is one of the largest recoveries of stolen tools we’ve ever made, and it sends a clear message that we will identify offenders and bring them to justice.“ He emphasized the impact of tool theft on tradespeople, noting that many are left without work and financial stability due to these crimes.
Ongoing Investigations and Recommendations
The tools, which filled 10 lorry loads, were discovered on January 14 and have since been moved to a secure police facility. Officers are currently working to identify the items and locate their rightful owners. Some of the recovered equipment is believed to be connected to thefts dating back to 2019.
Connolly urged tradespeople to take preventive measures by marking their tools with synthetic DNA, which can assist in forensically linking items to their owners, and to register serial numbers with manufacturers and the UK National Property Register.
