Chris Rea, the artist known for the seasonal favorite „Driving Home for Christmas,“ has passed away at the age of 74.
The musician died on Monday in a hospital after a brief illness, as confirmed by a representative of his family.
A statement from his wife and two children expressed, „It is with immense sadness that we announce the death of our beloved Chris. He passed away peacefully in hospital earlier today following a short illness, surrounded by his family.“
Rea’s Musical Legacy
The blues-influenced singer achieved notable success with hits such as „Auberge,“ „On the Beach,“ „Fool (If You Think It’s Over),“ „Let’s Dance,“ and „Road to Hell.“
In a tribute posted on X, Middlesbrough FC stated, „We’re deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Chris Rea. A Teesside icon. Rest in peace, Chris.“
Rea’s 1980s hit „Driving Home for Christmas“ narrates the journey of a weary traveler navigating through heavy traffic. The song has gained renewed attention this year, serving as a backdrop for the M&S Food Christmas commercial.
Personal Reflections and Health Struggles
In 2020, Rea shared a conversation with his friend and fellow Middlesbrough native Bob Mortimer through social media, recounting the song’s inspiration. At the time, Rea faced unemployment, had recently lost his manager, and was unable to drive due to a ban. His girlfriend, Joan, had to pick him up in London, which ultimately inspired the lyrics to the song, written in 1978 and released in 1988.
When reflecting on the song, Rea humorously noted how it provided him with „that lovely little holiday in the Maldives.“ Numerous artists, including Engelbert Humperdinck and Stacey Solomon, have since covered the popular track.
Despite his musical achievements, Rea battled various health issues over the years. He underwent pancreatic surgery after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer at age 33 in 1994, which subsequently led to the development of type 1 diabetes. Additionally, he suffered a stroke in 2016.
A Fond Farewell
Rea was born in 1951 in Middlesbrough to an Italian father and an Irish mother, sharing childhood with six siblings. He began his work life assisting with his family’s ice-cream business and later found his passion for music, launching his career with the debut album „Whatever Happened To Benny Santini?“ in 1978.
The artist reached commercial success in the 1980s, with standout albums like „The Road To Hell“ (1989) and „Auberge“ (1991) reaching number one in the UK charts. Later in his life, he returned to his blues roots while handling ongoing health challenges.
In 2017, following a recovery from his stroke, Rea released a new album titled „Road Songs For Lovers.“ However, he was compelled to cancel several performances after collapsing mid-show at the New Theatre in Oxford.
His final album, „The Christmas Album,“ was released in October 2025 and featured a remastered version of „Driving Home For Christmas“ along with additional festive tracks.
After his death, journalist Tony Parsons referred to Rea as a „top man“ and a „hugely underrated songwriter.“ TV personality Lizzie Cundy expressed her sadness over his passing, stating, „I loved every minute and it was an honor to work with him and be in his iconic music video. He will always be an inspiration and legend to me.“
Andy McDonald, Labour MP for Middlesbrough and Thornaby East, expressed his sorrow on X, noting, „Chris, a most cherished son of Middlesbrough, will live on through his wonderful music. My sincere condolences to his family.“
Rea is survived by his wife Joan and their two daughters, Josephine and Julia. He often credited his family as his source of strength during his health battles, stating, „It’s music and family with me. I’m only one of four, that’s how I am. I’m 25% of a unit.“
