Andrea Simon has been appointed as the new victims‘ commissioner for London.
As a founding member of the Mayor’s London Policing Board and co-chair of the London VAWG (Violence Against Women and Girls) Board, she assumes this position following five years of leadership as the director of End Violence Against Women.
Focus on Women’s Safety and Trafficking
Ms. Simon’s advocacy centers on enhancing the safety of women, as well as addressing issues such as child trafficking and modern slavery.
The Mayor of London, Sir Sadiq Khan, remarked, „Andrea brings an incredible wealth of knowledge, experience, and passion to the role, and she will stand up for survivors of crime across the capital, making sure their voices are heard.“
Commitment to Victims‘ Rights
In expressing her gratitude, Ms. Simon described it as a „privilege“ to take on the victims‘ commissioner role. „It is critical that all victims receive the responses they are entitled to when they report crime, but this is too often not the case, particularly for those from more marginalized communities,“ she noted.
She emphasized her dedication to addressing structural barriers that inhibit access to justice and ensuring that all victims have their rights respected and upheld.
The mayor further reiterated his confidence in her ability to be a vocal advocate for crime victims, stating that she will work diligently to reform the criminal justice system, ensuring it supports victims at every stage, while striving to create a fairer and safer London for all.
