New: Major Snowfall Approaches London This Week

Are residents of London prepared for the potential impact of an impending snowstorm? The latest weather forecast indicates a substantial wall of snow moving directly towards the city, expected to blanket the area as the first workweek of 2026 concludes for many.

Significant Snowfall Expected

A detailed weather map reveals a considerable wall of snow advancing towards London, with predictions set to materialize around 9 AM this Friday, January 9. Forecasters from WX Charts have highlighted the risk of accumulating snow, characterized by purple shading on the map; the deeper the shade, the greater the likelihood of heavier snowfall.

The snow is predicted to originate from a south-westerly direction, moving across the South and Midlands before proceeding to northern France. These predictions align with the BBC’s long-range forecast, which hints at a low-pressure system impacting the southern half of the UK, leading to snowfall in its northern regions and rain to the south.

Weather Warnings Issued

On January 5, London remained one of the few areas in the UK without an issued weather warning. The Met Office has released a series of yellow and amber warnings for snow and ice throughout Britain. The yellow warnings affect Northern Ireland, Wales, the Midlands, East Anglia, and various northern regions, indicating a risk of injuries from icy conditions and potential train delays.

Amber warnings, affecting parts of northern Scotland, suggest a ‚good chance‘ of isolation for rural communities, alongside risks of power outages and train cancellations.

Challenges in Snow Forecasting

One may wonder why predicting snow in London proves to be challenging. The likelihood of snowfall in London is generally lower compared to northern regions. Interestingly, while certain areas may experience dustings of snow, others just minutes away may be completely dry. This inconsistency occurs due to temperature variations between ground level and elevations only 25 meters above.

Weather expert Ian Currie explained, „Snow is very dependent on altitude. For every 50 feet, or approximately 15 meters, the chances of additional snow increase significantly.“ He noted that specific locations, such as parts of South Croydon, may see considerably higher snowfall rates than neighboring areas, illustrating how slight geographical differences can have significant weather implications.

Mr. Currie emphasized, „We are dealing with highly dynamic and complex systems. Even the slightest deviation in the path of a weather front arriving from thousands of miles away can result in entirely different weather conditions.“
