Organizers of the London Marathon are contemplating the possibility of hosting the event over two days in 2027. While no official approval has been granted yet, the team is actively investigating options to accommodate a larger number of participants.
This consideration follows a remarkable surge in interest, with 1.1 million individuals applying for the public ballot to enter the 2026 marathon, marking a 36% increase from the previous year.
A spokesperson for London Marathon Events stated,
„The London Marathon is the world’s most popular marathon, and we are continually exploring innovative ways to enable more people to take part, while delivering positive benefits for London. Together with our partners and stakeholders, we are looking at the intention for the 2027 London Marathon to take place across two days.“
The spokesperson emphasized that the immediate priority remains on executing a successful 2026 London Marathon, scheduled for Sunday, April 26, ensuring that every participant enjoys a remarkable experience.
Record Participation and Future Plans
The 2025 marathon set a new benchmark with 56,640 finishers. Given that there were 57,449 starters last year, only about 5% of applicants will have the opportunity to complete the course this year.
Reports indicate that discussions are progressing regarding a unique event that could potentially allow 100,000 runners to participate over the weekend.
A representative for the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, remarked,
„London is the sporting capital of the world and the Mayor looks forward to working with London Marathon and partners to consider if it might be possible to host an event that will run across two days next year.“
As plans evolve, the focus remains on enhancing the marathon experience for all involved, reflecting the growing enthusiasm for this iconic event.
