The chief executive of Pride in London, one of the largest pride celebrations globally, has been dismissed following allegations of misappropriating funds intended for volunteers. Christopher Joell-Deshields, who has denied the accusations, was suspended from his position in September after concerns regarding his conduct emerged.
Reports indicate that Joell-Deshields received his full annual salary of £87,500 during his seven-month suspension, which ended with his departure in March. The 55-year-old is currently embroiled in a legal dispute with Pride in London, stemming from accusations that he attempted to obstruct the investigation into his actions.
A group of volunteer directors from London LGBT Community Pride, the organization responsible for various aspects of the annual event, alleged that Joell-Deshields misused £7,000 worth of vouchers donated by a sponsor. These vouchers were reportedly meant for raffle prizes and gifts for volunteers, but the directors claim he used them to purchase luxury perfumes and Apple products.
In a whistleblower report, the volunteer directors also highlighted a troubling „bullying culture“ within Pride in London. Following an independent investigation into these allegations, the organization announced on Tuesday that it had decided to terminate Joell-Deshields‘ employment. He had been in the role since 2021.
Although Joell-Deshields appealed the dismissal, the decision was upheld by an independent council, according to Pride in London.
Pride in London, which operates with approximately 100 volunteers year-round and four paid staff members, stated that interim chief executive Rebecca Paisis would be implementing a new governance structure to ensure the organization adheres to the highest operational standards.
This year’s pride celebration is scheduled for July 4, and sources within the organization have indicated that it will proceed as planned. The event incurs an annual cost of around £1.3 million and relies on approximately 1,000 volunteers on the day of the event. It is primarily funded by corporate sponsors, alongside an annual contribution of about £175,000 from the Mayor of London’s office and the Greater London Authority (GLA).
Legal Challenges and Ongoing Investigations
The dismissal of Joell-Deshields may provide some stability for Pride in London, which has faced significant challenges in recent months. The investigation into his conduct has also led to a legal battle in the High Court, which is expected to conclude shortly.
In September 2025, a High Court judge ordered Joell-Deshields to relinquish control of Pride in London’s assets, including bank accounts, internal systems, and equipment. By January 2026, he was back in court facing two contempt charges for allegedly failing to comply with the court’s order, which Pride in London’s legal team argued was an attempt to obstruct the independent investigation.
Representatives for Joell-Deshields contended in court that he had not returned a company laptop because it was purchased for him by the organization after his personal device was damaged during work. He did acknowledge a second contempt charge for not providing a signed statement confirming the return of all company property.
Last week, Pride in London’s legal team returned to court, asserting that company property had still not been returned after seven months and that Joell-Deshields had not filed a defense in the case. Deputy High Court Judge Matthew Butt KC issued an order indicating that the court would rule in favor of Pride in London if Joell-Deshields failed to file a defense within the next two weeks.
During the proceedings in September, Joell-Deshields’ representatives stated that his agreement to comply with any court order regarding the return of company property should not be interpreted as an admission of guilt.
According to reports, Pride in London’s directors eventually regained access to their internal systems and accounts by contacting a former volunteer in the IT department, whose login had not been properly deactivated.
Pride in London has been approached for further comments regarding the ongoing situation.
