The dismissal of a bus driver for striking a thief who stole a necklace from a female passenger has been labeled as „shameful and unjust“ by shadow justice minister Kieran Mullan, who has initiated a petition advocating for the driver’s reinstatement.
Mark Hehir, who was operating the 206 bus for Metroline in June 2024, testified at a tribunal that he acted in self-defense during the incident. The bus route runs between Wembley and Maida Vale in north-west London.
Details of the Incident
During the tribunal, Metroline argued that Hehir’s response was „excessive“ after the thief, captured on CCTV, was seen throwing the first punch and was subsequently knocked unconscious.
Mullan stated, „As an MP, I can’t compel a company to change its actions, but with public backing, we can pressure them into making the right decision.“ He emphasized that Hehir’s bravery ensured the safety of his passenger and rectified an injustice.
„Sign this petition if you believe Mark’s termination was unjust and that Metroline should either reinstate him or provide compensation. It is absurd that one of their concerns was that the robber was considered a ‚customer.'“
Aftermath of the Incident
Both Hehir and the thief were arrested, but Hehir was later released without facing any further police action. Following the incident on June 25, 2024, Hehir was suspended and summoned for an investigation.
At the disciplinary hearing, he faced allegations of „bringing the company into disrepute by physically assaulting a passenger“ and „failing to ensure the safety of himself and his passengers by leaving the bus unattended with the engine running while pursuing the assailant.“ Hehir defended his actions by stating that he instinctively ran after the thief, leaving the bus doors open and the handbrake engaged.
Evidence presented at the hearing included a note from a detective indicating that Hehir’s use of force was „proportionate and necessary“ given the circumstances to defend both himself and the female passenger.
The petition asserts, „Responding swiftly to assist individuals in critical situations is challenging, and even trained professionals can err. However, those who act rightly for just reasons when many choose to ignore the situation deserve our support, rather than facing punitive measures.“
