Plans have been put forward to rejuvenate one of London’s oldest street markets, Kingston Ancient Market, featuring new stalls, a central plaza, a restaurant, a bar, and a rooftop terrace.
The management group Between the Bridges, which assumed control of the market in April, aims to ensure its sustainability for future generations. They have submitted a proposal to Kingston Council that includes replacing the current stalls, redesigning the layout, and enhancing facilities with new public restrooms, seating areas, and shaded spaces throughout the market.
Proposed Enhancements and Layout Changes
Among the significant changes proposed is the relocation of the existing statue from the center to the edge of Market Square, allowing for the creation of a central plaza. This area is designed to accommodate up to 45 stalls for pop-up and themed markets, as well as events during weekends.
Additionally, the Grade II* listed Market House, which has remained largely unused in recent years, is set to undergo renovations to restore its function. Plans include the establishment of a restaurant and café on the ground floor, alongside a bar and event space on the first floor.
Aiming for Community Revitalization
The initiative seeks to reestablish the market as the „beating heart of Kingston’s Old Town.“ According to the planning documents, the proposal aims to transform the market square into a vibrant, adaptable, and inclusive public space that honors its historical significance while meeting the demands of a modern community. Originally opened around 1170, Kingston Ancient Market currently features 28 permanent stalls and operates daily from 10:00 BST to 17:00.
Between the Bridges took over the market’s management from Kingston First, which had been overseeing it under a rolling agreement for the past year, as part of Kingston Council’s broader strategy to revitalize the attraction.
