Southall park confirmed as local nature reserve by council

Southall park confirmed as local nature reserve by council

A park in west London has officially been designated as a Local Nature Reserve (LNR) by Ealing Council.

Warren Farm, located in Southall and known for its diverse wildlife including nesting skylarks, wildflowers, butterflies, and bees, received this classification on Monday.

This decision came after an agreement was made between the council and Imperial College London, along with Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, who co-own the land at Warren Farm. The agreement allows for the adjacent area to be developed into a new community sports facility.

Community Response and Support

Peter Mason, the leader of Ealing Council, remarked,

„This declaration establishes a much-needed green lung for this part of the borough.“

The move follows a campaign initiated by the Brent River Park charity, advocating for the LNR designation for Warren Farm. Katie Boyles, the chair of the charity, expressed gratitude, stating,

„Our charity launched this campaign back in January 2021. At that time, we were emerging from Covid lockdown, and people were discovering the wonders of nature and wildlife on their doorstep in the Brent River Park.“

She continued,

„A heartfelt thank you to our 26,000 plus petition signatories, our volunteers, our local experts and national conservationists who wrote statements of support, and the national and local groups that have been with us all the way. We commend Ealing Council for recognising our rewilded meadow habitat’s environmental value.“

Planned Facilities and Community Impact

The facilities planned for the adjacent site will primarily feature cricket and football pitches. An Ealing Council spokesperson indicated that discussions are ongoing with a preferred contractor to manage the site.

Blerina Hashani, Ealing Council’s cabinet member for thriving communities, noted,

„Southall is a town with substantial health inequalities, and the combination of community sports facilities and nature reserve gives us the best of both worlds.“

This initiative aims to enhance both recreational opportunities and environmental conservation in the area. Additionally, there is a growing interest in new housing developments, as seen in der steigenden Nachfrage nach Wohnraum in grünen Nachbarschaften. In der Zukunft sind auch neue Wohnprojekte geplant, wie die 220 neuen Wohnhäuser, die in South London entstehen sollen.
