Tate has revealed its highly anticipated exhibition schedule for 2027, featuring renowned artists such as Claude Monet, David Hockney, Edvard Munch, Sonia Boyce, and Thomas Gainsborough, among others.
As the largest gallery network in the UK, Tate continues to set the standard for exceptional programming, following the success of its recent Tracey Emin retrospective. With the upcoming Hurvin Anderson exhibition set to open at Tate Britain, the institution has now outlined an exciting array of exhibitions for the coming year.
Highlights at Tate Modern
The 2027 season at Tate Modern will commence with a significant exhibition dedicated to Claude Monet, exploring his relationship with time. Titled Monet: Painting Time, this exhibition will run from February 25 to June 27 and marks the gallery’s first comprehensive showcase of the Impressionist master’s work. It will feature loans from around the world, illustrating how Monet captured the swift pace of modern life through ephemeral moments.
In the spring, Tate Modern will present its inaugural exhibition on ink painting, focusing on 20th-century artists from Hong Kong, Taiwan, and mainland China. Ink, scheduled from April 22 to August 20, will highlight this enduring and philosophical art form through 80 works, examining its connection to nature and challenging Western narratives in modern art.
Summer will see the Turbine Hall transformed by a major multimedia installation by David Hockney, coinciding with the artist’s 90th birthday in July. Known for his operatic designs, Hockney will showcase large-scale projections of his sets and costumes from prestigious venues such as the Royal Opera House and the Met Opera.
Following this, Tate Modern will host the UK’s first solo exhibition of Baya, a groundbreaking Algerian artist, from June 10 to October 17. This exhibition will feature over 100 watercolors and ceramic sculptures, celebrating Baya’s vibrant, geometric style and her influence on notable figures like Pablo Picasso and André Breton.
Simultaneously, the gallery will present the largest exhibition to date of Indian artist Nalini Malani, running from July 1 to January 3, 2028. Malani’s monumental multimedia installations challenge historical narratives and evoke complex emotions, earning her international acclaim.
In the autumn, Tate Modern will focus on contemporary American artist Lynda Benglis, showcasing her innovative wax paintings and sculptural works from September 30 to March 5, 2028. Benglis has pushed the boundaries of art for over five decades, utilizing diverse materials such as bronze, ceramic, and polyurethane foam.
The season will conclude with an exhibition dedicated to Edvard Munch, running from November 11 to April 23, 2028. This exhibition will delve into Munch’s cinematic and expressive imagery, featuring his experimental films and rare archival materials alongside key works from his series The Frieze of Life. Insights from filmmakers and scholars will provide a deeper understanding of Munch’s lasting significance.
Additionally, Tate Modern will continue its tradition of annual commissions, including the cutting-edge Infinities Commission in the Tanks, the participatory Uniqlo Tate Play summer commission, and the renowned Hyundai Commission in the Turbine Hall during the autumn.
Exhibitions at Tate Britain
Tate Britain will kick off its 2027 program with a retrospective of British and Afro-Caribbean artist Sonia Boyce, running from March 24 to August 22. This exhibition will trace Boyce’s evolution within the Black British Arts Movement of the 1980s, showcasing her large-scale installations, photography, collage, drawing, film, and sculpture, including notable works from her Devotional series.
In the spring, Tate Britain will celebrate the 300th anniversary of Thomas Gainsborough with a major exhibition from May 20 to October 10. This will be the first comprehensive survey of Gainsborough’s work in over two decades, featuring 120 paintings and drawings that highlight his significant impact on British art history.
As part of the celebrations for David Hockney’s 90th birthday, Tate Britain will host a second exhibition dedicated to the artist from October 7 to February 20, 2028. This retrospective will explore the pivotal role of Hockney’s relationships with friends, family, and lovers in shaping his artistic exploration of intimacy and human connection.
In the autumn, Tate Britain will present its first major exhibition on Tudor art in 30 years, titled The Tudors, opening on November 18 and running until April 23, 2028. This exhibition will feature significant works by artists such as Hans Holbein and Nicholas Hilliard, including iconic portraits of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I, and aims to enhance understanding of this historical period through new scientific research.
As always, Tate Britain will continue its Art Now program, showcasing emerging artists through a series of free exhibitions.
