Police have detained six teenage girls in connection with two separate incidents of anti-social behavior in Clapham, southwest London, reportedly driven by online trends, according to the Metropolitan Police.
On Tuesday, around 100 officers responded to reports of large gatherings on Clapham High Street, where youths were attempting to enter shops and a restaurant. Additionally, they ignited fires and discharged fireworks on Clapham Common.
During the chaos, three girls were arrested after five individuals were assaulted, including four police officers. One officer sustained injuries while making an arrest. A similar disturbance occurred on Saturday, resulting in the arrest of three other girls.
London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan condemned the incidents as „appalling,“ stating that those responsible would „face the full force of the law.“
On Tuesday, police apprehended three girls—one aged 17 and two aged 13—on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker after they were called to the scene around 5:00 PM BST. The 17-year-old has been charged and released on bail to appear in court later this month, while the two 13-year-olds were also granted bail.
The Metropolitan Police reported that on Saturday, three teenage girls were arrested on suspicion of theft and assault following another incident involving a large group of youths on the High Street. This trend has been linked to a recent case where a 13-year-old boy was arrested over a viral phenomenon.
In response to the disturbances, officers implemented a dispersal order on Clapham High Street on Tuesday. The police indicated that further arrests are anticipated in the coming days related to both incidents.
„Just because you have not yet been arrested does not mean you will not be,“ a police spokesperson stated, emphasizing that specialist officers are utilizing CCTV footage and body-worn cameras to identify those involved.
Witnesses described the scene as alarming. Christine, who was walking with her husband and baby, noted the unexpected presence of hundreds of young people. She remarked, „We weren’t sure what was going on initially. There were a lot of police and police cars. You don’t see that very often; even having such a heavy police presence was very unusual. It was clearly people up to no good. It was quite intimidating, especially with a new baby.“ She added, „It’s a great neighborhood; I’m sure it’s just a one-off. The police were very good; it was reassuring to have so many around.“
Sheikh Awais, an employee at Rooster Spot, a local chicken shop, reported that 70 to 80 young people entered the establishment on Tuesday, some behaving rudely and aggressively. He expressed concern about the impact on business, particularly during peak evening hours when customers typically buy food. Following police advice, he decided to close the shop.
Yash, who works at Olive and Meze, recounted witnessing the chaos. „Once the police arrived at Sainsbury’s, they ran to McDonald’s, and there was a fight. I had to close the door; I don’t want any trouble. There were so many of them; you couldn’t count them. I would say around a thousand were running around.“
Local businesses reported that food shops appeared to be the primary targets, with McDonald’s experiencing theft of food items. Another shop owner remarked, „It’s very strange, the shops they go to. It’s not trainer shops or anything; it’s food.“ Marks & Spencer reported damage to its high street location on Saturday but closed early on Tuesday without further incidents.
Calls for Parental Responsibility and Community Action
Detective Chief Superintendent Emma Bond, who oversees policing in the area, urged young people to reconsider their participation in such gatherings, which can escalate quickly due to online trends and viral content on platforms like TikTok. She warned, „If you join in or cause further disorder, you should expect to be arrested and risk a criminal record, which can have long-lasting consequences for your future, including employment opportunities and potentially your ability to travel.“
Bond also called on parents and guardians to take responsibility for their children’s whereabouts and to ensure they are not involved in anti-social behavior.
A policing strategy has been established, which includes increasing officer presence and utilizing dispersal orders to manage the situation effectively.
Bell Ribeiro-Addy, the Labour MP for Clapham and Brixton Hill, acknowledged that while this incident was significant, it is not unprecedented. She noted, „It’s also something we’ve seen increasingly over school holidays. We really need to look at making sure that young people don’t come to these gatherings in the first place.“
