A 16-year-old boy has lost his life in a fire that erupted near a fire station in southeast London, which was unstaffed at the time as firefighters were responding to another emergency.
The blaze ignited in a first-floor apartment on Cooper’s Road in Bermondsey shortly before 15:00 GMT on Wednesday, according to the London Fire Brigade (LFB). Fire crews arrived within six minutes and managed to bring the situation under control by 16:34.
The teenager was pronounced dead at the scene, while another youth, who had exited the building prior to the arrival of four fire engines and 25 firefighters, was transported to a hospital with serious facial injuries.
Fire units from Dockhead, Dowgate, and Shadwell responded to the incident, as the Old Kent Road team was occupied with a different call, as stated by the LFB.
Once the other incident was resolved, crews from Old Kent Road returned to the scene, utilizing their 64-meter (210-foot) turntable ladder.
The Metropolitan Police are currently investigating the cause of the fire, which is believed to be non-suspicious. The family of the deceased is receiving support from specialized officers.
