Liverpool has been urged to pursue a significant transfer involving Arsenal star defender Jurrien Timber.
Timber has become an essential member of Mikel Arteta’s defense, demonstrating versatility by playing both right-back and center-back, which has contributed greatly to Arsenal’s status as contenders for the Premier League title.
The reigning champions, Liverpool, have faced challenges in maintaining consistency throughout the season, particularly in their defense, having conceded 26 goals in 18 matches. Captain Virgil van Dijk’s form has noticeably declined, while the absence of Trent Alexander-Arnold has been felt significantly.
Timber, who was sidelined during Arsenal’s 2-1 victory over Brighton due to injury, has been identified as a potential solution to Liverpool’s defensive issues.
Former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock commented, „When I assess the defense and potential signings for Liverpool, I believe they require both a center-back and a right-back. In the right-back position, they have [Jeremie] Frimpong, [Joe] Gomez, and [Conor] Bradley. Unfortunately, all three are prone to injuries and lack the durability needed for consistent play. This is a situation they need to address.“
Warnock added, „Liverpool is a stronger team with a dedicated right-back, which enhances the overall balance and allows players like [Dominik] Szoboszlai to perform better in midfield. Thus, securing a right-back is as crucial as finding a center-back at this time.“
He further expressed concern about the current situation, mentioning, „The problem with right-backs lately is that they often appear to be midfielders in those roles, reminiscent of [Pep] Guardiola’s approach. A specialist right-back can be challenging to find in January, but ideally, I would choose Jurrien Timber. However, I doubt Arsenal would entertain that possibility, given his status as one of the league’s top right-backs. His skill level is impressive, especially in one-on-one situations, and he has shown resilience following his ACL injury.“
