Members of the RMT union representing Tube drivers have voted in favor of initiating strike action in response to the proposed implementation of a four-day work week.
As of now, specific dates for the strikes have not been announced.
An RMT representative stated, „Our members will not accept TfL’s plan to condense the working week for Tube drivers, as this will lead to unpredictable shift patterns, increased fatigue, and heightened safety risks.“
Transport for London (TfL) has asserted that the proposed changes would be voluntary, ensuring no reduction in contractual hours, and aims to enhance reliability without incurring additional costs.
The RMT representative emphasized that it is crucial for TfL to take the concerns of their members seriously. They noted, „A majority of Tube drivers have expressed their disapproval of these proposals. Our members are ready to engage in industrial action if TfL does not alter its current approach.“
RMT leadership is required to provide TfL with a two-week notice prior to any strike action.
A spokesperson for TfL mentioned that discussions regarding the four-day work week proposal were initiated with trade unions last year, focusing on the best methods for implementing this new working arrangement.
„We have begun conversations with our unions about how to implement a four-day working week specifically for train drivers on the Bakerloo line,“ the spokesperson added. „These changes will be voluntary, and there will be no reduction in contractual hours. Those who prefer to maintain a five-day work week will still have that option. These adjustments are intended to enhance reliability, allow for more flexible deployment of our drivers, and enable us to provide a modern and efficient service without incurring additional costs.“
