„We are pleading for help from our local council to avoid eviction,“ stated Shauni-Leigh Tyson, a resident of Newham, as she and her family confront a potential eviction due to health complications arising from damp and mould in their home.
This east London family is facing the prospect of being removed from their residence in Plaistow on January 23, despite having established a repayment plan with Newham Council. Owing to health issues caused by the persistent damp and mould, Ms. Tyson’s partner, Adam, has been rendered unable to work, further complicating their financial circumstances.
Health Complications and Financial Struggles
According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, Ms. Tyson revealed that the mould has negatively impacted their health, contributing to one of her children needing steroid treatment, antihistamines, and a pump. The London Renters‘ Union is advocating for the family’s situation, highlighting that the mould has impaired Adam’s ability to perform his manual job. This issue, combined with other financial difficulties, left the family struggling to meet their rental obligations.
Ms. Tyson moved into the house in 2014, only to encounter damp and mould issues shortly thereafter. She has repeatedly voiced her concerns regarding these conditions, yet significant repairs were not addressed until September of the previous year. The council responded, stating that repairs were completed „in a timely manner, as and when we were able to access the property.“
Impact of Living Conditions
As a consequence of the deteriorating conditions caused by the damp, Ms. Tyson mentioned that she has had to dispose of numerous personal belongings, including two sofas, bedding, books, and clothing. „I’ve had to throw away curtains, a lot of clothes, mattresses, and bed sheets,“ she lamented.
Despite receiving an eviction notice in November, the family has negotiated a repayment plan with the council. Nonetheless, the threat of eviction persists. The council has assured that eviction will not occur if an „equitable solution“ is reached and the family adheres to the terms of their rental agreement.
